Totally dying to lob it in the sea to see what I catch but not a clue about useing it properly (all I know is tie it down so you don't loose it and bait it pmsl!)
We have allot of Spider Crab here when in season managed to catch aload of gudduns last year on shore but are there any tips or tricks anyone knows on how to net 'em?.
Probably stupid questions...
What are the best in your mind terraine area's to use one?
Are there any rules or regulations I've got to abide by? (other than min EU/DEFRA size of your catch).
Whats the best bait for crab in your experiance?
Our neighbours found an excellent Lobster Pot washed up on Caswell Beach last year (there using at as a garden feature ) hopeing to ask if we can borrow it as well when we go out boat fishing so any advice on Lobster Potting would be great two
Thanks

its afine trap for freshwater crayfish ,minnows and prawns, sadly sod all use for crabs!what you need is whats called a drop net for the spiders from a boat pier jetty or the rocks:
al ternatively make one from a bycycle wheel rim and an old onion sack as i did some time ago!also worthy of some attention is old fresh water fishing keepnets cut to size or landing nets. try your local freecycle for these or the local recycling center.
i fish weymouth for the spider crabs in october time,,i usually tie a half mackerel in the center of the net and lower it onto a clear bit of seabed ,be it sand or gravel,as long as its big enough for the net itll do,generally i can keep an eye on the net and when theres a few on one big bugger ille bring it up,bring it up with some gusto that way the water preasure will keep any prawns in the net too.
personal quota's for crabs dont exist however edible crabs must be 4 inches accross the back,i dont believe this applies to any other species of crab in our waters, there is personal quotas for lobster,ie 7 per 24 hour period (you would be lucky!) The legal measurement is the carapace only. The minimum legal size is 3.5 inches, carapace length this varies around the uk but not by much ,in sussex its 85mm in north wales its 87mm . The length excludes the claws and telson (tail) so the lobster appears much larger.
edible or brown crab:
often i will cook the prawns on site with a gas cooker and a pan of water, but then i do live 50 miles from the beach so getting them home alive to cook is a problem. the spider crabs i just keep the legs ,cook them on site and take home to devour the fresh white meat with fresh bread.......yummmmmmmm
hope this answers yer questions. _________________
more than answers my questions thanks for that!
Goin skip diving at the weekend to make my own drop net's now for sure!
Normally it's near Worm's Head we get the Spiders from so the homemade idea is a cracking one! save's splashing out (no pun intended lol) on costly gear especially as the terraine round there can be ruff in winter so any losses won't be too much of a problem.
What would you suggest I weight them with though ?
for lobsters yyou want the bait to be stuck in the fridge for a few days to go stale for brown crabs (edible crab) you want it as fresh as possible for lobsters you also want to set them on rough ground and for brown crab they can be set anywhere
