How exactly would one go about snaring red deer, purely out of interest of course?

I was reckoning on steel cable anchored to a good tree, 4mm cable should do it right?  Loop size?  What height do I set the loop at?

Alternatively, what else could I use to catch deer?  Firearms and bowhunting are not options.  I would prefer not to deadfall as if someone stubled through by accident, it would be terrible.  I heard a story of some guy using custard pies on roads and letting traffic hit them, irresponsible I know, but if custard pies attract them then they could be attracted and netted or something.

Why is a firearm not an option?  It's not expensive to buy anyway, most people round here would be happy to get £1/lb for venison.  And as for custard pies.....

in ancient times a leg hold trap would have been used , they have been found preserved in bogs and have been dated back to far beyond the stone age.
ille try and find a link , but basically it was a log hollowed and a willow stick used as a spring in the trap , held open with a smaller stick. when the deer placed its feet in it would dislodge the smaller stick and the willow would grip the foot . all though these traps varied in size from 1 -  5 feet in length  , set on a game trail generally the principle was that it would slow the deer down to the extent that it could be caught .  the good thing about this trap was that game could be released unharmed if it was too small or in calf.

I looked up that ragnar benson fellow, one of his books looked interesting, "survival poaching."  Anyone got a copy of it, is it full of guns and suchlike?  I couldn't see videos of his anywhere.

Oh, firearms are out as I cannot get a FAC and I'd not be comfortable without one.  Venison is fairly cheap aye, but it's always better when you catch it yourself.

Fish, that trap sounds interesting, I'd imagine you have to watch it all the time though?

Unfortunately my dog is not fast enough for deer and I cannot get another one.

Thanks everyone for your help.

nope , thats the beauty of them . the so impedes the deer that it wont be far and certainly easy to track , any one finding one wouldn't have a clue what it was!
