Why is home distillation illegal?

Home brewing is easy as pie, and its seems logical to progress to distillation.

So why is it illegal?

I have heard horror stories of people going blind from drinking methanol instead of ethanol. How true is this?

If ethanol vapours at 65 degree celcius with todays home technology a reliable and accurate still is relativley easy to create.

Any views anyone?

Tax purposes I reckon.  It would be easy to distill some for yourselve, then sell it.

Actually Laws changed...

Its now legal to distill your own as long as its for personal use only.

Can even get the distillers on ebay. But would sooner make a reflux system myself.
