My mate just came round all flustered as he had a rat cornered in his shed so I got me rifle and went round he only lives over the back from me.
Well there it was a fully grown male jumping up the walls I tried to get it in the sights but it was too dark to see it properly and I had no torch Bugger!!! So I had to use the next best thing an old spade he had lying around I really hate being close to ratty so the adrenelin was running high and the sodding thing was jumping all around the place then it went under a black bag Whack Whack went punch with the spade a bit of a squeek then ratty was no more but niether was my mates spade I hit that rat so hard with it I knocked the blade off.
This all took place in a brick built 8x4 shed and my mate was well pleased I had a can of blackthorn with him, whilst we were chatting I asked him if he was worried about going in the shed with the rat himself and he said Nah I got you cos you like killing things and to be honest he was right I really did enjoy the rush of that encounter I left the rifle with him but I know he wont use it but he'll sleep better tonight.
I feckin' hate the grey scaly-tailed gits, but am totally, and I guess morbidly, fascinated by them.
I know exactly what you mean about the rush when dealing with the little feckers - I reckon it's one of those excited/fear/determined adrenelin rushes when closing on the enemy!
I still shiver when I remember the incident over 20 years ago whilst ratting in some old pig units when I went down to pop a ferret in and a grey barsteward shot out of the hole, up my arm and over my shoulder. I swear that the fecker sniggered as it passed me lughole.
catching them by hand are you mad?!! I am too paranoid to touch them when they are dead it is something that has been instilled in me by parent and uncles I used to go ratting with terriers with them in kent round the chicken sheds Brilliant memories of that.
