Had a go making pegs out of a bit of hazel i had.Tried to put tin around the big one but couldn't get it stay tight enough(any tips greatly appreciated ),but i'd sawn the split so don't think it will split anymore ,the small one was split with the knife and tied off at the top.Seen pics of them both on t'internet and they worked so just another 11 to make for my mrs xmas present(she is so so lucky )
I made some 35 years ago ! i had no idea how to go about it, i drilled a small hole at the end of the cut where the clothes line would be, i used some ash, holly, and willow , i cant say they were a big success but they kept the washing up until such times as we could afford to buy luxury plastic ones !
is the hazel nut tree different to the hazel tree????
im after some new net peggs for purse nets
A mate showed me some net pegs made from Elder, sharp and as hard as iron, and common,he splits a trunk/decent branch and carves them from that, really good imo.
hazel is hazel! as for getting the tin bands to stay, werent the originals tacked with a tin tack? thats what ive done before and it works well.
a bit of pyrography on them pegs and mrs will be very happy! try motivational scripts on each one she will love them and will help in her daily duties !: 'a tidy home is a happy home' 'a hoover isnt a paper weight' washing machines do washing' 'a duster isnt just for xmas...' _________________
My uncle used to make them by the fire he had a long spike that he used to heat up in the fire then bore through the wood and tin hoop from old cans.
Then he put a thick type of wire through it similiar to fencing wire cut it so it a bit longer then hit it with a hammer forming a type of rivet.
After doing this he would turn the completed peg in the fie until just scorching then rub it on a cloth on his leg 'To give em a bit of colour' he would say.
My mum nan and aunts all used his pegs I still have one somewhere.
Can I just give u fella s a bit of advice, us ladies like nothing more than a present for xmas but not pegs ! If that s all u give ur mrs for xmas then I d make sure u wear a tin hat and run lol !
