I was given a zander last week by a mate.  Baked it simply with a slice of lemon inside and it was bleeding lovely.

So, any top tips for catching them?

Hello Twiggy,

Here in the Netherlands a lot of people fish for zander, most used bait are artifical soft plastic lures (shads, twisters etc) and small dead bait (roach 5- 12 cm) fished under a float or ledger way.

Use a long rod 10 foot +, makes it easier to get the bait where you want it, and makes it easier to keep the fish from obstacles in the water.

Most are caught in rivers and large lakes.

Hopes this helps a bit.

Cheers,

Rb

sadly theyre not in all our rivers......yet! but as ratbuster said ,deadbait, live bait,or lures work well. they feed in packs hence the nickname 'water wolf' . its a fish on my wish list! have a look on you tube theres tonnes on there about them!

good luck and take a camera!

Thanks for the tips, chaps.  I got given mine by my Greek barber, who is a fanatical fisherman/shooter/wild food gatherer.  I took my boy in for a rug re-think yesterday and told him how good it was and also the pollack that he had given us, and he said that he had a customer in this week who had caught a 9lb'er this week.  When asked if he'd taken it home, the bloke said he'd knocked it on the head (club rules).........and THROWN IT BACK!!!!  He then said that he gets at least one 6lb + fish a week and would never contemplate eating it!  Needless to say my Greek friend has pointed out the location of his freezer to this guy.

I hope to get out in the next couple of weeks either on the Severn or the Avon and give it a go.  I'll do some leg-work this week and try to get some decent marks.  Once I've done this if any of the regular members on here fancy a run out, I'll be pleased to take them out - just as long as they don't laugh at my knots, 'cos I've got fingers like pigs t*ts!

I don't particularly fish for zander, but as Fish pointed out they often hunt in packs, they'll hunt and kill smaller fish, then come back and eat them-so,if you get a run which is quickly'dropped',leave it where it is,it may take 20/30 minutes, but they'll quite often come back for the deadbait

Cheers Froggy,

That's an interesting fact that I didn't know.  Hope that La Belle France is sunnier than here.

Thanks,

Twiggy
