bush-craft is a very important thing and in order to make it easier should the time ever come practice is needed.Today my boys and i went into the woods to build an open fronted bender ,they were keen to get stuck in especially 5y.o jack who is very bush-craft oriented. we gathered a mix of beech saplings and hazel sticks and proceeded to make our shelter.
Robin jack and I were to be sleeping out this eve but the weather forecast was for 60% chance of rain from 11pm till 4am so we have put it off til Sunday night which is due only20% chance of rain.

the kids set to work gathering materials

the main frame finished, plenty of room!

the entrance is facing east to make the most of the early morning sun for warmth,we gathered a large pile of seasoned birch and ash for the camp fire.

hope fully we will have a darn good time tomorrow eve and acquire a pheasant or bunny to cook over the spit!

steve ,thanks mate, much of what i know is lerned of necessity,as a kid if you wanted food you nicked it ,killed it or foraged it. most of the family budget was blown by my mother on fags and god knows what, she had a 100 a day habbit at one point! that and her addiction to prescribed opiates i fended for myself, dont get me wrong it wasnt all like that all the time but some times it was that and more,my escape from it all was a small woods on the estate called the folly, there i learned my skills and with the advent of Lofty wisemans book i had even more to practice!
