hello there peeps, I haven't posted posted since joining so thought i would start by asking your opinions on bringing on a young dog. No disrespect to the young folk on here but i would rather hear from people who know how to bring on a dog to it's best. Let me explain why i ask. i am helping a young lad that has done a bit in his time but has never had a pup to bring on (he has had older dogs already trained). His dog is now about 9mths, i am trying to teach him how important it is to actually get/ keep his dog fit, ie road work ect, feed according to the amount of excersice, NOT running his dog at every chance he gets. I have only known him for about two weeks, but i can see so much potential in both owner and dog. If only i can get it through to him that he has to be patient and not push his dog too soon. There are a few things that should of been taught his pup already but I am sure his dog will learn quickly. I have sent him a link to this forum so i look forward to him getting some good sound advice on how to bring a young dog on. Maybe its because i am a woman he may not just take my word it lol.
1/ RECALL 2/ON THE LEAD WALK TO HEEL.
3/ SIT 4/STAY REWARD ALL POSITIVE ACTS WITH A TREAT,5/WHEN RECALL IS GOOD TRY working him to see if he will carry back to you, a dummy representing, medium sized rabbit, again reward and praise, all positive acts, good walks morning/ and evening go to a book shop buy a book on how to train a lurcher, not to expensive one, you only want to know the basics,
Thanks for that bl, Am sure that will help me encourage lad but am looking for a bit more back up atm, as i do know how to train up a pup , but am looking for more reasurance for him that i know what i am doing. he does read A LOT and watches dvds but sometimes some of us need a bit more than reading. nowt better than having someone at your side showing you. So a little bit of the advice i have already given on the keeping his dog fit and the importance of road work not rushing his dog ect would be great. He is a good lad and am trying to direct him in the right direction. .
Is that Maive who ate all our lettuce last year along with the pups? . You know my views on this let a pup be a pup, youve seen our girl and she's comming on grand, for me you need that bond with your wee lass or laddy so spend as much time with them, most of our girls field commands have been taught during play and her beautiful tone and body again through play and josslin about with rest of dogs and plenty good long walks on lead not through charging about up hills and fields all day like some people seem to think we do, she gets loads of praise and re assurance, Its not a race at the end of a day and I would always say go off your gutt feeling you know when your dog is ready to put all that training into practice, your mate is in good hands and im sure the good people on this site will lead him the right way, as for being a women I know what you mean but I wouldnt worry, when your dogs are doing their stuff and other half comes home and tells me they are beltin im happy, its one of them I dont know everything and take and listen to advice from the do'ers not the wanna be's and then I still go off my gutt feeling.
' will come good with the time your willing to put in '
hey, bush how ya doing, yes it is me that loves ya lettuce. Thanks for reply, nowt like a bit of common sence back up. if your pup turns out half as good worker as her mum she will be a bellter.. his pup is coming on good but am finding it so difficult to rein him in, he is rushing things too much i am about to give in . he is so wanting for his dog to catch and kill, he hasn't even thought about bringing it back, but hey ho we can only do what we can.
It really upsetts me as slim has come on so far, he now walks past other dogs, comes back on a sixpence, goes on a good mooch, but think i'll lose this one, thanks for ya input though.
By eck Maive, it not like you to even think about giving up on a dog, hang in there, well until the voices tell you to kill!!!! . Think its one of them, we get odd frown when people ask if young un is catching and we say no, you know what we think of our dogs, its a pleasure bringing them on. and you get what feel like set backs I know we are gonna get some, she's just comming out of season now and reckon in next few months to come every thing we've done with her will go out of window for a short time, a chase and kill is a way off yet but not that far away to give up. He really needs to stick to the basics and take it at a slow but steady pace, his efforts will be rewarded well, with a good loyal and healthy dog to do him proud in the field, right to much computer got dogs and ferrets see to,
