Black PheasantAnyone else noticed the increase in numbers of black pheasants? Not noticed them before but this year there seems to be loads around here.
A friend of mines husband is a game keeper in Scotland and they live on the estate. They had some silver pheasant which were incredibly tame - not much good for shooting as they weren't keen on flying so consequently they had been hanging around for a bit. No longer - a shooter was exercising his dog, pheasant wondered of to dog, its now an ex pheasant. Maria was devistated - she's been feeding the bird in her garden since last season!
To be honest I didn't realise pheasants came in different colours!

Pity the flavour doesnt correspond with flavour: black for liqurice, brown for gravy, light brown for chocolate, silver for chicken. Then you could pick the flavour for your meal as they fly over.

of course there are many species of pheasant 35 if i recall corectly, and the ones we have most comonly raised for the shoot ,the common or ring necked pheasant (Phasianus colchicus)
comes in many shades from white to black, allthough the extremes are rare.you probably find that theres more black/dark ones as theyre being selectively bred.
heres some pics of different species of pheasant:
golden pheasant:
lady amhurst pheasant:
reeves pheasant:
silver pheasant:
crested fireback pheasant:

I sort of knew about the onamental phesant I was just surprised to see them from a shoot. Spoke to a beater friend and he said all the beaters hate the black phesant as they can't get them to fly high enough for the guns.

well a few years ago all my pheasants were shot at night when they would make you 30 bob a brace now i think its not worth loosing a nights sleep over a few pheasants, as the old saying goes the best keeper is a reformed poacher!.
