Me and my eldest lad went out this morning with the dogs, the pup [7 months old] ran a rabbit through a barbed wire fence and grass had grown up and covered the bottom strand about 10" off the ground.
He hit it pretty hard and i thought he would be badly hurt,he lost some hair from his shoulder and had a 4" graze on his inner forleg,a big releif.
I was just thinking, with all this pc bullsh*t of bans, shouldn't barbs be banned on wire?
And ive never known smooth wire [still dangerous, but not as lethal imo]be any less effective than barbed wire, are barbs really needed on wire?
Ill hasard a guess barbed is cheaper somehow.
ps,i havent been to the spot for a while and the fence was new,or he would have been on the lead with rabbits about.

sadly trees and barbed is a frequent cause of injury on our dogs! and yes i agree, barbed is no better than plain!
glad yer dogs ok !

my pup got hank ed a couple of weeks, fence with double strand barb wire at the top, he was caught by the hind leg, we were lucky, it tore a lump a flesh out on the inside leg, as only a young dog I took him to the vet for antibiotic, injection, and some wound powder, cost £42.00, his wound is almost healed now, ((( I did not have any
hydrogen peroxide, on hand I would have used that,
lurchers running dogs, Wire is an occupational hazard, and it is inevitable they are going to get caught, one day or another, as for mine he has to learn to jump higher and more cleanly

Personally i try and discourage jumping, not easy with some dogs admittedly, but how many times does the dog catch when its had to jump?
in my area it ussually means a lost rabbit or whatever.
Ive seen some bad injuries and two deaths with fences i would sooner lose the rabbit than risk my dogs jumping wire.
As for trees you cant avoid them,i just bring pups up letting them run around in the woods, they clip the odd sapling and ussually learn in my experiance.

My lurcher had 24 stitches in him after hitting barbed wire.
We was on the lamp after bunnies and a big red "charley" got up in front of the dog.
The fox hit the fence as well but got away. I ended up carrying the dog 1/4 mile back to the car.
but he made a full recovery. they should make it law that only the top strand could be barbed OR even better, get rid of the stuff.
