as a kid i was always sent down to the beck, walking through picking all the eggs in the bottom of the water, there was usually quite a few and always guaranteed fresh. The cold water stops any chick growth and if the egg goes off it floats away. so if ever you see them in the bottom of a beck youd do good to fetch them out
