cheers mate,the ebony was realy hard to cut and shape,how does it compare to ironwood? i think the effort was worthwhile!
the burl is just one piece of about 4 huge bits i found in a skip (dumpster),this one is oak ans ide say well seasoned. is burl any good for making catties or is it too weak?

Damn Fish,that is some serious looking Burl! You found it in a dumpster? I love it- another "Dumpster Diver" like me!!!!!! The Ironwood was a Royal pain in the Butt to carve. very tempermental and a lot of checks and fine cracks. I'm going to finish it(one day) in CA (Crazy Glue) and then buff it out. Supposedly comes out like glass. We'll see. As far as the Burl. there are voids ,weak spots,soft spots, cracks- it's a hit or miss thing,but if you find a good chunk-the end result is stunning! Go for it Bud,it was FREEEEE! Flatband
