death stretch

what did you do with the fish it looks massive
kent taxidermist

Nice boat mate, and nice blonde ray! what was the weight of that thing?
furdy

That one weighed 21 lb.....have had them to 27 lb from that mark....

Its close inshore in 18 feet of water with hardley any tide so can fish it with light tackile......I had one of 16lb on carp gear.....took an age to land it though, but good fun.....

DS, I throw them back..!!!!!
kent taxidermist

yeah no point keeping blondes, best bet is to keep thornbacks if your keeping rays at all. though there alot of work

iv set my gill nets to night, its spring and im about 0.5 miles from east church gap (one of the biggest spawning grounds for thornbacks in the thames estuary. so probably will get a few

have you ever had stingers before furdy, they litterally suck onto the sea floor and almost impossible to get em up, you have to brute force them with way heavier gear then u would usally use for there size
furdy

I've had two stingers, 8lb and 17 lb. Odd looking things, really thick. Didnt like the wild tail lashing much I must confess!!!!

The solent holds quite a few and we get them turning up on a cpouple of local beaches, Climping and Pagham in West Sussex.

One was caught last year at 58 lb from the beach.

I keep the odd male thornback but I'm not a great lover of skate wings. I prefer to keep the dogfish.

Yes, although  not something I would go out of my way to eat.
Not surprisingly it tastes pretty much like skate.

There are some who say stocks are diminishing so they should be returned, but I dont believe there is any hard evidence for this.

I think rays are pretty much all the same, the commercial boats include them all as skate wings. I only take a few male fish now and then as they seem to outnumber the breeding females anyway.
