File knife updateWell here it is finished with African tulipwood scales salvaged from a dodgy looking statue, brass pins and copper liners from an old teapot.
Everything on this little knife is salvaged exept the epoxy, oil and wax.
Got quite a good hamon on it as fish advised and I am very pleased with it so now on to the next one.

Who would think that could have ever been an old file? well done,i really like the tulip wood scales as well.
Might sound a stupid question but whats a hamon? ive got no idea.

The hamon is the transition between the region of harder martensitic steel of the blade edge and the softer pearlitic steel of the back of the blade. IE different tempratures being applied to the back of the blade and the edge.
so basically the back is softer than the edge making it more flexible it doesn't really matter on a blade this size but it looks nice.
I love google as that is how I found out what fish was on about so I gave it a try.
HTH
And thanks for the encouraging comments.

In the dark of winter I am going to have a go at making my own, being a bit of a pyromaniac it will be fun trying. If succesful I will give you a shout then for a decent opinion.
My poor wife has visions of me moving into the front room with my kit as we have a good fire in there, but setting fire to buckets of oil may be going a bit too far

oooh can i come and watch? mild steel and an old chainsaw blade makes for a good damascus steel ime told!

Of course you can fish once I get my head round it Are you thinking of a nice heavyweight catty?

Really nice looking knife that - glad to see I'm not alone in thinking leaving some of the file as a file is a good idea on a woodcraft knife - it's got to be better for striking a firesteel on than the back of the blade.
A knife from an old file is definitely on my 'must do' list - really ought to finish the catty and the woodburner first though.

nice knife here is one I made , files make great knives and I like leaving some of the hatch marks on there too.

That is very nice I like the timber you have used too there is something very satifying making your own knives isn't there.

im not sure what the scales are ..I ordered a set from a company and i got the ones you see with it ...they must have screwed up the order..anyway I liked them more than the ones that i picked out.
yeah i love making things myself ..anything is better when you make it yourself
