Fish traps, old and new.....................Fish traps we use on the reef, the coconut-fibre ones my wife can knock-up in a few hours, the bigger man-made one the local blacksmith knocked-up the framework,I used to swim out several times a day to check them, biggest fish was a 15kg moray eel which gave me quite a shock

Allowed?Hi T_W
Cool traps mate, wouldnt mind trying these myself, but legalities? not that it makes a lot of diference, except knowing the yays n nays of stuff always helps in deciding, not IF to use them, but where, and when, so any idea on the cans and cannots mate?
Cheers

Cans and cannots mate?Wouldnt have a clue about UK legislation, wouldnt they be classed the same as lobster-pots?They are certainly effective

cans n cannotsYea,imagine they would fall under their ruling, but not even sure on the rules on those, for instance, do lobster fishermen have a licence, can imagine a few irate crabbers here getting right annoyed if anyone started leaving traps near their patch, which if its their living I can understand, but not having access to a boat I would have to use them in the bays, which on Anglesey there are quite a few. I actualy go snorkeling for lobster so would only use them if it was a set and forget fish trap.

legislation is simple
if its not a salmolid and its above the minimum size your aloud to take it
but you need a licence to sell the stuff you catch
also legislation about not being allowed to take berried lobsters (lobsters wwith eggs)
if you dont have a boat do what i do simply set ur pots on rough ground at low water and check when the tide goes out

also if taking crustacians there is a limet of 1 lobster and 6 crabs per day,and as stated the lobster mustnt be berried, not sure on the minimum size on lobster but i think its 4 inches on crab.

thanks guysOk, thanks guys, understand about berried lobsters,I once took a Lobster a good 30 miles back to a bay when I realised it was berried, soft or what huh, lol.
Not too worried about the amounts etc,I only tend to keep what I want personaly.
You going snorkeling for anything specific T_W or just pleasure?

actually its 2 lobster per tide fish
and didnt realise there was a limit on the ammount of crabs you can take (presume thats brown crab your talkin about)
also when measurin minum size for lobsters the size is done on the carpace only

Diving and snorkelling WOTW,maybe/probably spearfishing and I am visiting a seaweed farm on a shallow coral reef just off the tubbataha, last time I went I speared half a dozen sea-snakes,black and white banded things, they are collected, the hides tanned and turned into leather

They are about 3-4 feet underwater mate,I lived in the sulu archipelago for a while, stayed with the badjao sea-gypsies,they were farming the seaweed for the japanese market,I actually dove a few times and collected it myself in deeper water,I will get some pics of the type of seaweed, the kids hair shines like silk after they have been snacking on it for a few days
