gill net and a trout lake

dunno who it was but i read this on the chat fourm

Quote:
got better things planned tonight involving a 50 yard net 2 trout lakes a lurcher and a herd of fallow.

firstly when i ask these questions i need to point out that i am not planning to net any trout lakes what so ever as poaching is both ilegal and would get me doubly fucked over as im doing a foundation degree in fisheries management and i hope to be working in such an industry when im finish the course im on (which i point out is a very close-nit industry)

anyho what im trying to say is how would you set such a net, just lay it in the center and come back later and see what youve caught (im use to setting nets for seabass)

or do you drag the net the same way as a seine (minimum time spent at the area though presuambly mixed results with greater possibilty of damaged nets)

or do you set them in strategic areas and if so which areas do poachers set them

also if you set them in a middle of a lake how does a poacher get to them, boat canoe swim (other way)

anyho im not asking for personal accounts of you poaching as poaching is illegal and youd be commiting a criminal offence

but more to people have 'witnessed' poaching lakes and how the poachers did it  :smt005

personally i just drag through smaller pools,or use an inflatable and row out and round in a half moon back to the shore furthur along then just pull in,bit like hugh did for mackerel on chesil.another method would be to streach the net accross the river then depth allowing walk the fish up stream into the gill net.
ime sure theres a miriad of ways to do this.
also of note is that ive found that with clp on weights and floats a long net works a treat on shallow pools! :smt001

Thats was me who posted that. Obviously i was joking and wouldn't really do such a thing. Theres people on the site who could answer your question alot better than myself but it's up to them wether they choose to or not. With my very limited experience of joking about such activities i would imagine the net is set from one bank to the opposite one then pegged down. The net would be pulled across by walking the perimeter with a rope then tieing that to the net and pulling it across. The fish would be caught by swimming into the net. Bad explanation i know but thats just what i read.

Good fishing all    Joe

P.S. Which college are you doing your fishery at?

joe h you have a pm

As is stated in the stickies, any posts are fictional and anecdotal. Don't worry about telling us what you wouldn't do because it's naughty, let us know what you'd do in an ideal world. :smt005

I don't know anything about carp, but I'd imagine you sell them for ponds rather than eatin them?

I reckon I'm beginning to get the hang of gill nets, however I'm convinced I'm rigging them an unneccessarily long way.  What I do is cut the length of net I need, keeping some string through the top and bottom rloops.  I then pass leadline through the holes, and tye a plastic ring used for creels around the ends of the leadline.  When I don't do this, the leadline tends to tangle horrifically as it goes back through the rings and through other rings and is a nightmare.  Then, I untie the piece of string through the top loops, and tie it to the headrope whilst tieing the other end of the string to a post.  I then move over enough loops, untie the headrope and string, then slide on a float.  I then tie the string and headline back together, then slide over more loops, and repeat the process until all my floats are added.  The main problem I have is the net gets caught on the knot when I'm sliding it over, which takes a few seconds to untangle.  I thought about using a krab instead of a knot, would this improve my method?

Thanks
Tidal_wear

Fishy,I helped a guy rig a 250yard net last week, took a few pics, gimmee a month or so till I am back and I will post them
fishy1

Oh, and generally, is the net tied to the leadline and leadline at intervals or just at the ends?
Tidal_wear

Intervals mate, mines every 9 inches, the length of my needle
fishy1

And with what knot?

Thanks TW.
