i am looking for a  gill net to practice my bush craft skill s ,what i wont is may be a dual purpose net to use in the sea &fresh water if that is pos. i cant find much info on it as i have never used or seen one being used i could do with some advice. Could any one point me in the right direction for a supplier and what mesh sizes , i would make it my self but i just finished replacing all my purse nets for this season and i don't have the time to bang out a 50yard gill net.

cheers tidal wear that was so help full

WISDOM COMES FROM SHARING KNOWLEDGE AND ONLY THE WISE WOULD KNOW THIS !
Tidal_wear

Temper, temper BF   I never laid claim to being wise, that was just to show you that maybe you should use a rod?As you said, you know nothing about gills, using a gill in freshwater in the UK is illegal, and the odds of anyone on this sceptered isle having to use a gill in a survival situation is nil.
Tidal_wear

If your going to quote to me however, heres one for you"Mans ego is the veil that shuts out the light"   theres loads of threads on here about gills,do a search.
bullfrog

i was just looking for advice from people how have used them so i didnt was my time & money
Tidal_wear

What fish you after and what type of waters will you fish?Freshwater and sea nets dont really cross-over too well, sure you can catch freshwater in sea nets and vice-versa but your better off getting different nets.

Bullfrog my mate is selling a gill net. It has a 12 inch mesh size, 5 meshes deep and 12 meshes long. Pm me if your interested.

Tidal wear only uses the dry fly method, anything else isn't purist enough for him.  (He's a bit of a snob.)

If you want gill nets, advancednetting is good (google it), they sell finished up nets I believe.  I might be able to do you something although I'm going to be away fairly soon for a while.

Mesh wise, it varies.  I use 55mm mesh mostly in dreams when I'm fishing inland, monofilalament.  Just do small rivers and lochs high up where the fish are not that big.  Biggest I've caught was about half a pound, you'd get larger in waters with suitable sized fish.

In the sea, I use 120mm mesh, multi mono, that way the whole thing is legit.  Caught pretty much everything in it from pollack of about a pound up to the large silvery fish that are traditionally smoked...

Of course, this is all a dream.
bullfrog

nice one mate for passing on that dream
cheers tim

Nothing wrong with being a fishing purist
fishy1

Oh of course there's nothing wrong, if I could get 30 big trout in half an hour with the dry fly like TW has do you think I'd use anything else?
Tidal_wear

As you just insinuated, its probably only one fish photo-shopped
JOE_H

Fishy1 you just lack that special touch mate. Dont worry one day you might catch more than a cold. Good luck lad. Joe
Tidal_wear

Fishy has short term memory lapse,it was only three months ago he was asking me how to make nets on one forum, then trying to sell nets on another, gluing Knots   Nescafe expert, instant,Tinternets full of them   I just did a quick photo-shop   Custard-pie deer traps     Edited to remove photo-shopped pics   Fishy,as for wiring deer we both know you couldnt wire a plug, even though I saw you giving sage advice on bushcraft UK on snaring you read elsewhere
JOE_H

OOOPS caught you out there mackem. The fish 3rd from the left second row on the first pic is the same fish 2nd from the left at the top on the second picture. Also i seem to remember that fish in the 3rd pic being 1 ounce i photo shopped it remember, of course we have to because rainbows are hard to catch.
Tidal_wear

Everyone chases rainbows joe, luckily we bought 60 from tesco fish section   Are we still buying salmon next weekend?
JOE_H

Yeah mate fish monger reckons he can get us some that look fresh enough to use in the piccys. He said if we just payed him a fiver to use them then give em back. Nice bloke
Tidal_wear

I reckon I'm beginning to get the hang of gill nets, however I'm convinced I'm rigging them an unneccessarily long way.  What I do is cut the length of net I need, keeping some string through the top and bottom rloops.  I then pass leadline through the holes, and tye a plastic ring used for creels around the ends of the leadline.  When I don't do this, the leadline tends to tangle horrifically as it goes back through the rings and through other rings and is a nightmare.  Then, I untie the piece of string through the top loops, and tie it to the headrope whilst tieing the other end of the string to a post.  I then move over enough loops, untie the headrope and string, then slide on a float.  I then tie the string and headline back together, then slide over more loops, and repeat the process until all my floats are added.  The main problem I have is the net gets caught on the knot when I'm sliding it over, which takes a few seconds to untangle.  I thought about using a krab instead of a knot, would this improve my method?

Thanks
fishy1

Tidal wear, yes, I am man enough to ask for advice.

And I am getting the hang of these gill net thingys, been on a course, supplied a few boats  with nets recently.

While I'm honourable enough to not post someone's pm's without asking them, I do recall you saying something about electrofishing razorfish being impossible.

This is strange, those solway firth partenership folk seem to be saying people have done it and it should reported if anyone sees it.

"There have been concerns that electrofishing for razorshells has been taking place in the Solway Firth.  Electrofishing applies an electric current to the sea bed, causing the razorfish to ‘jump’ out of their protective seabed environment and so making them available for harvest by waiting boats.  Whilst some consider electrofishing to be minimally invasive, highly specific and with little impact on neighbouring biota and habitats, it is currently illegal to use electrical stimuli for fishing in European Waters (Council Regulation (EC) 580/1998, article 31).  Electrical currents used in excess can kill other marine life, and there are reports of dead fish floating on the water in areas where electrofishing has been carried out.  Additionally, electrofishing may incapacitate non-target marine life making it vulnerable to predation.  Of particular concerns is the effect of electrofishing in areas where there are populations of electrically sensitive fish such as sharks, skates and rays.  And there are also considerable Health and Safety issues in areas where recreational water sports, such as SCUBA diving, are carried out.  There is currently insufficient data to assess the environmental impact of razorfishing.  Whilst it remains an illegal practice, any records or sightings of electrofishing for razor fish or any other species should be reported on the 'Report Suspicious Activity' facility on the Scottish Fisheries Protection website http://www.sfpa.gov.uk/suspicious.asp, or phoned in directly to 0845 270 3990. Both routes can be done anonymously."

But of course, it must be wrong, as you are always right.
Tidal_wear

Not at all fishy,I was totally wrong on that, but I still havent set myself up as an instant expert anywhere, and that wasnt a PM,its in a post on the forums   Please show me a photo-shopped pic

TW, I was joking about the photoshopping, that you have so many fish, and some of them in a gill net, which would be illegal, but I know that you are really a good law obiding guy so that picture must have been photoshopped.

Ah well, it was a bad joke.
