you,re gonna struggle with the 8 ft rod, mine are 12ft and 16 ft. the 8ft sounds like a boat rod, i'de read up on line and shockleaders before going out, don't want you or anyone else to get injured. take care mate   ...mack

8ft rods alright i suppose but your gonna be in close schoolie bashing

you wanna go to a mixed ground beach and get youself 2 dozen peelers (males shore crabs should just be starting to peel)

use a size 1/0 hook in ethier a running ledger style or  flapper rig and for the schoolies you shouldnt need to cast more then 50 yards

but iv never fished sesly but just thats just quick suggestion for genral beach work

8footer would be ok for a pier or harbour wall though.

but not on a beach.....too small a rod, remember u have to cast beyond the breakes, and id say ure gonna get a few over the next 24 hours, dont forget ure vest....

Your not going to get the compression with aa 8 foot rod to power the baits right out

i know

thats why i suggested close in bassing,
however ideally you'd want a 12ft beachcaster (im not a great fan of anything longer)

but then again febuary early march is the time when its pritty dead unless your after the small stuff

theres a myth that you have to cast 200yrd plus to catch fish its simply not true! alot of people over cast the fish

1st place i always try if im fishing a beach with groynes is near the end of the groynes as theres usally a depression where food gets trapped and the fish know it

or where the shingle meets the sand or mud (good for flatties)

only time u really tend to need a long cast is shore tope (if you know where you can get them from the shore )
and rays

but to be honest when i like to go fishing i like to catch for the pot so im after bass sole dabs plaice and whiting
fish

in the summer months i like to use a 12 foot carp rod and spin in the surf for bass.

I saw Selsey on the news last night.

At high tde you could sea fish from any of the pubs on main street.

hi lad's thank's for the replies,,, i'm gonna stick with the 8 footer cos thats the biggest ive got and i aint spendin anymore money on rods yet a while.. i bought a jig/lure  thing which is basicly a couple of latex mini mackerels with hooks in em spaced out about 18 inches apart with a swivel at the top and a 5-ounce diamond shaped lead weight at the bottom , the whole thing is about 5 feet in length.. heres a pic of some similar looking things of which i bought
Gareth

A bit early in the year for lure fishing off the beach yet.

Although those Mackerel shads may be good from the leeside of a pier for Wrasse and Pollack, etc
