Hammer Net

This hammer net is a reproduction of nets once common in the Pennsylvania Dutch area of eastern Pennsylvania where I live.  The name comes from the large mallet or hammer which was used to beat the river bank to scare the fish towards the net operator. A draw string at the bottom of the net opens to retrieve the fish.  Tony.

Hammer Net

Thanks for the kind words.  The net is made from cotton twine using a 3/4" wide gauge.
There is another difference other than size between the Hammer Net and a Haaf Net (only seen in pictures ).   When a fish drops into the sleeve of netting that drops below the pouch of the net it is held in place.  THe net operator can lower the net into the water without fear of the fish escaping.
This net is illegal to use nowadays.  I need a permit just to display it.  Tony
