Hawking:

A few photo's ive taken whilst flying my golden eagle in the wood's at the back of my property.
Just to mention this time of year i do not do proper hawking trips out as most game is out of season and hawks are moulting etc,my golden eagle is thus no longer at a true sharp hunting weight but still obediante to exercise in free flight, and i take him to an area of the forest with little ground cover as i dont want him to take roe kids at this time of year.(Raptors only hunt when they have a appetite,so they are kept lean and fit for hawking)
Whilst i had him following on through the woodland canopy he spotted a fox way of in the distance,to far for me to see properly. But Mr Fox was not far from its earth so it reached safety to soon just around 10ft before my fella made impact.

Please excuse the quality as its not easy taking pictures with one hand and the subject is more than active!

And here's one from outside the fox earth with my fella peering down the hole waiting for Mr fox to bolt!!!

Then a Roe lure flight that i pull out from my rucksack a pull along on a long line to mimmic his running quarry, then once he has hold of the head end i give a mock battle for him to release his aggresion just like on the real thing ;)

(Now were's the buggar gone?!!!)
Hope you like them.

Very good looking Bird, what weight does he hunt at?

I have a Male Red Tail Hawk, currently in the breedng aviary with a mate's female. He hunts at 2lb 8-12 oz any heaiver and he beomes lazy. The female hunts at 3lb 2-6oz and is sitting on we think 4 or 5 eggs at the moment. Both are larger than averge for the breed, and the male has exceptionally large feet. So we are trying to breed larger than average young Redtails from them.

We aso have 2 pairs of one year old Red Tails. All moulting out at that moment, when the've finished we'll start taming and training. Then we'll hunt them through the autumn and winter, pairing them up for breeding next spring.

many years ago there was an article about a guy in scotland that hunted fox that were bolted by terriers and caught by a golden eagle, i  remember the pics and it looked like lots of fun, are many foxes still hunted by owners or golden eagles or was he a one off ?
