Snap Cap

Hmmmm?
This photo of an 11 year old girl who apparently killed the bear has been knocking around for a while now, Now I am not against bear hunting, far from it, but looking at this picture I cant help but think why? That bear judging by the size of it has been alive a very long time, has seen many sights and lived like a bear should, and here is is proudly displayed as a "trophy" for some kids ego trip. Not how I think this proud animal would like to have ended his days.
The article that went with it said the bear was not a known man eater and had no history of making a nusience and may possibly have never seen a human being before. I just dont see the reasoning behind shooting it.
What are your thoughts?

Here Here, not a probem with it either, as a child, the memories will last forever, we all had to start somewhere, its not as if their on the endangered list............ Still a magnificient grizzly, would'nt have minded shootin it myself

i wouldnt have shot it.................................as idv been running for the feckin hills!!!!!jeez thats a big bugger!
i can see snaps point but none the less,i believe they eat them over there.and the indigenouse peoples of america believe its spirit will be born into another beast,so not a waste i suppose. i dont think i have a room big enough for the rug!

Feel much the same as yourself snap cap. Im not against bear hunting but that does seem a real waste, but then again if i saw a cracking roe buck i dont think i could have resisted slipping the lurcher preban of course. Joe

Dosent sit right with me, killing big game like that should be about tracking, fieldcraft, understanding of your chosen quarry etc. i cant see how all that would be there in an 11 yr old boy or girl or even alot of adults! At that age you should be hunting small game, gaining knowledge and honing your skills.
Does anyone know the full story, was it a canned hunt or was it done properly? Either way, she will struggle to beat that in her hunting career, maybe peaked a bit early before she could really appreiciate it?

It wasnt a canned hunt mate, alaska if I remember the story correctly

On one hand, all my shooting is either for food or vermin control (protecting food). I try to instil in my children a respect for living things, the countryside and other people. If you are to shoot something then have a purpuse for it after its dead.
One the other hand, I can see the thrill of hunting such a big, dangerous creature.
However I would have to be sure its death was more than pleasureble for me (which is the bit a lot of antis baulk at) but purposeful also.
Me being me would sell all the claws to fish for a start, the rug for TW's living room, Mayfly could buy some hair for tying........

I dont see the point of shooting a bear that doesnt cause any harm. You wont eat it, and there are not that many left so wy would you need to shoot one. And it's not realy something to be proud of, youj ust drive in a car and when you see the bear you can shoot it from a few hundred yards away.

Some species of bear are actually increasing in number foxbow, and contrary to opinion they are eaten.

Iv eaten bear and it tastes like crap.
Wy would you start shooting them again when they are just starting to come back, they arrent pests or something they probably havent even seen a human in theyr lives. I have been on a bear hunt with my grandfather ones ,but that was because it was killing animals at some sort of local zoo.

Its a bit like the wildlife management in Africa,if people werent paying hunting fees and tags then their numbers would take a dive as there would be no need to protect them,an Alaskan Grizzly hunt your going to get no change from $15,000,a polar bear hunt knocks that up to $35,000(nunavut indians are selling some of their tags)and the good old bargain basement black bear is yours for $2.000_$3,000,those sort of prices buy a lot of conservation.

A point well made. i have spent a fair amount of time in southern africa and the best run and best policed reserves with the most game were always hunting concessions rather than the National Parks. in fact NPs were usually heavily poached and seldom had enough resources to combat it whereas Pro Hunters running concessions as a business can really keep on top of it.

same in britain all the best wildlife is found on well run shooting ground, even bill oddies nature watch programs are made where shooting is done. just leave things to nature and all you would have is vermin to look at
|

Thats correct Steve, look at the grouse moors, you think they would still be filled with grouse(all grouse are born in the wild, not reared like pheasant)if people werent paying £X,000 to have a day after them?Conservation mate, and its hunters who pay,if one grizzly is stalked and shot so that another 500 are conserved thats a small price to pay

phil

not if that one bear happens to be you
|
Tidal_wear
|
Phil, agree or disagree But its fact, plain and simple, that hunters in some cases, however oxy moronic the statement appears, make the best conservationists
