Lads where the feck are all the rabbits gone.

Lads I was walking the fields near ny house with one of my terriers and I just cant get over the lack of wildlife. There is no rabbits at all around . I blame the mixi. around ten years ago the place had plenty rabbits but nothing now . there is a big decline in ireland in general. I was just wondering is there the same problem in england? Like this is why I am  so interested in my conservation project. so i can enjoy the great thrill that is the hunt. Like even my dogs are getting pissed off at this stage! If anyone at all knows anything at all about reintroducing rabbits in areas and re stocking then any help will be greatly appreciated. Please look at my rabbit concervation topic if you are interested in helping. I am comitted to my cause.

Its a bit thin around here too, my mate came here to my work a couple of weeks ago with his ferrets and lurcher, not a single rabbit came out of the old and normally well used warrens, there are still a few around but myxi is round, i've had a couple in my motor, just putting them out of their misery. There are a few foxes on site, but there always has been, feral cats too but i've thinned them out, so it must be the myxi.

I have to agree with you guys - now, I don't go out looking for them but used to see hundreds of rabbits just driving home from work. Now I barely see any.

You say bring back the old days - I remember our Orchard at the bottom of the garden, on the farm, being overrun with the damn things! Dad and I used to sit with air rifles out the window .. weren't so many when we'd finished!!   LOL!!

Editted to say : whoops sorry just noticed this was titled for the 'lads' - apologies!! haha

Hey Bullrussel, I agree with you there, there are hardly any rabbits down here in Wex. either. Not sure if its because of mixi, too many hunters or too many houses. There are some on some local playing pitches, but not near as many as you see people posting pictures of from their area. Friends of mine walk for miles to do some lamping.

I've heard that some rabbits are getting immune to myxi, and are staying above ground more to avoid the fleas. Not sure how true this is though.

Just as a matter of interest and to see if we can get any answers, what kind of an area do you live in? Near housing estates, middle of the country, hilly area, etc?

Wish you all the best with your breeding programme!

I live in the country side by an estuary. the land is mostly dairy farmed, large fields with electric fences surrounding them and ditches on the outer perimeter of the firlds. The field i will release the rabbits in is howeve full of bushes and cover and was originally full of rabbits but there has been nothing there in four or five years now. I plan to change that farely lively.
FrankieK

I see. Weird that. Its probably myxi and hunters taking too many?
I'd agree with you to release them in cover. I'd say they'll thrive!
Good luck!
