Lathe turned Hobo line

This is the project that I set for my 15 year old son today We selected a beech log from last years fire store that was very dry.

Charlie has never used a lathe before but with a bit of guidance and encouragement and the tinyest bit of help from me here is what he managed.

Some pics for you all this is turned from a solid log and you get a sneaky little peak at a bit of my shed.

centering log

turning off excess and turning down end to fit in chuck

getting basic shape

sanding

Boring centre

staining and oiling

Finished

Hobo line with the other half of log so you can see how much was removed.

To say I am really proud of charlies first ever attempt is an understatement He must be a natural.

Praise is most welcome for his efforts and I will show him what you all think of his first ever turning project.

Thanks for looking

Brilliant stuff! Looks spot on, he can be proud of that. Nice set up in the shed with the lathe.

Well I don't know much about wood turning but that does look very nice and I would pay good money for that sort of work. Well done young Charles

He says thanks for the comments,
I wanted him to make the handline after seeing monkeyboabs wanted thread and the price of the ones in the link so I wondered how hard it would be for a kid to make.

Not that hard it seems with the right tools I asked him what he wanted to make next after showing him how much a proper one could sell for, well just to let you know he wants to make a cup ball game and an egg cup for his sister, Kids Eh?
