Leadline /floatline numbers

Could someone explain how these are worked out?  I see for example a no4 floatline, or a 2.5 leadline, but what exactly do they mean?  Is it the weight they can hold up?  Would a no2 leadline and no3 floatline float and vice versa?

th numbers denote the weight of the line, and should be matched to the fly rod. wf,dt,st, etc make no difference to the number.

Fish, I wasn't talking about fly fishing, instead I meant the things with gill nets.

I will explain it when I have a bit more time mate, but at the moment I am using a net off the beach which has no lead-line,and the floats are made from an old pair of flip-flops    and it catches VERY well.Heres pics of a net I worked on last week............................
