lurcher breed

I know a bloke that has put his full bred beddy over a full whipet he has pick of the litter and said I could have it for £200 both parents are workers.

Would this cross make a good lurcher and is it worth the price I want it to work with ferrets.
squirel killer

in my mind although i am not that experienced

they should make brilliant ferret n dogs

good on the lamp aswell

but i dont think they will be out and out blacktip rabbit deer or fox dogs  just what i think if anyone can correct me.

bedlingtons are very hard game dogs i am picking a bedy greyhound pup on saturday

i would go for it mate if you want it for rabbits
confused

I've had 2 the first one "Blue" was the best ,he was a super wee dog 19/20 inches rabbits were just what he lived for ,i had him with me all day when i worked on the farm ,so he was fit!! he could take a blacktip simply because he would chase forever , never strikeing untill the bt was beat ,he had plenty chances on them so he took a few ,but not really his game , bunnys and pheasants  well that was just another day at the office as far as he was concerned , a great nature lived in the house ,no mess, a good dog , the second one "scruff"bought to replace "Blue" she was ok ,but never as good, she only made 16/17 inches, she was rough coated and had plenty guts ,a sharp wee bunny dog, and earned her keep , but she was never as clever as "Blue" but then again she had a hard act to follow !! i reckon my next one could well be a beddy x whippet, or a collie x whippet, nice size for in the house.
hare basher

very good breed try and get a broken coated one as beddies hav more blow than a wippet so it will run longer than the wippet type should make very good rabbit dog and bush dog with ferreting good luck with it this time next year youl be bashing bunnies lol

i've looked into buying 1 a few years ago, the dogs i think make around 21" but i bought a 1/2cross collie greyhound cos i did alot of lamping and wanted somthing with a bit more body
but if you want to use it for ferreting and general buggering around, i don't think you can go far wrong, and when its old enough, give us a shout and we'll go for a mooch !!
border lad

I had one first x blue rough coat, could not stop her from hunting on, in the field stone deaf to all recalls
a menace you would be in one field, and she would be two fields away, 2nd one gry/whippet x bedlingtonx greyhound, a very nice racy type of dog, I gave it away at 6 months old the same traits
as the first one, maybe my luck, but I never would have another, and I have not seen any world beaters from that x AND i HAVE KEPT DOGS FOR A LONG TIME,

could it be soft training? i used an electric collar on my dog and he was trained in 4 weeks!

Its horses for courses to be honest. I have a beddy cross and as BL says they will be away if you let them. Keeps him close when he's young, make sure the recall is drumed in from an early age.

Hunting up at night is easy to discourage if you walk them at night and get them used to the lamp. Not to work but just to be out and about. Take them out when small enough and they still need to be close to you to feel secure and when you turn the light of they naturally come tight for comfort. This is something that stays with them and makes the recall much easier.

The beddy cross will freelance though. Much more than a collie cross. If you want a dog that does as you tell it then buy a collie cross if you want a dog that will work on its own to a certain extent a beddy may be for you but you need to be hard on it from the off. Dont back down and be consistant. Beddy cross will mature a couple of months later than a collie cross too.

The only thing I would say is beddy/whippet hybrids are inferior to beddy/grey hybrids. The difference is 21 inches and lightweight or 23 inches with a bit more bulk. In my experience the bigger dog loses nothing to the small dog and gives every advantage. Just my opinion though.

I don't know if this type of dog is what I really want after the replies so I will give it a bit longer to study these breed types.

I am not used to lurchers as I have always had Labs and terriers A bloke I know has a dobyxgreyhound x bull terrierxgreyhound Its as vicious as a lion and looks very sturdy its well behaved on the lead but off it it hates and wants to kill anything with 4 legs Inc. dogs, blokes begging for mercy and even cows.

So really I am looking for a direct cross of two breeds that way I may be able to tell the type of temprement it has as I have my kids to consider too.
