That fully moderated brings back memories, nice bit of kit that.
BigCharl

She shoots really well but it is a bit long, just after I bought it a second hand folding one came up for £150 but I'd already spent me money on this new one, gutted!
fish

love the air arms! how quiet is the moderated sg?
BigCharl

They say as quiet as an unmoderated air rifle, I would say its a little bit louder but it is a vast improvement on a normal shotty, at 100 yards you hardly hear it, more of clap than a bang. Charl.

The way to make em really quiet is to take about a third of the powder out of the cartridges,or make light loads if you load your own, even a conventional end mounted silencer is very quiet with these, quieter than an unmoderated HW80,you obviously lose a bit of umph though.
BigCharl

I think I'll have a go at that, I'm using webley sub sonics at the mo but they are 3" magnums I've been told the 2" and 2.5" are a bit quieter but the sub sonics are the only ones with felt wadding cos your not supposed to put the plastic stuff through in case it gets caught up well that's what the gun shop said (about webley being the only ones with felt). Charl.

Its a good idea to look down the barrel after every shot if youre using a silencer, ive only ever heard of it happening once though.

Eleys arent bad but the Hull cartridge jobbies are tops, stay away from continental/american cartridges, win and fiocci [spelling]are bdooly loud.

My mate took his fm 410 apart to clean it,he cleaned out the silencer body and swilled it out with parafin,he let it drain out and dry for a week, then we had a windy night,we were in a gully when he took the first shot, the flames must have been a yard long coming out of the end and it sounded like a cannon,i nearly sh*t myself,he insisted on trying it again [i stood well back] and it did the same again,we left in a hurry.
Just thought you ought to know that.

I'll definitely make sure I don't clean it with paraffin,  boody eley not webley I knew it was some thing like that, so Hull Cartridge make sub sonics as well then if so that chuffin gun shop near me is crap no help at all he wanted £360 for one of these guns and the RRP is £315 just as well I shopped round and only paid £280. Charl.

P.S. he told me only eley make sub sonic .410
tyke

Ive never heard them called sub-sonic to be honest,we just tried different ones and found Hull the best, the old paper cased ones were pretty quiet but if they get damp they sometimes swell and not fit the bore properly.

Im going back some time,we havent had 410s for years now, things could have changed a bit?

We havent shot birds seriously for some years really,we had a few problems with a local keeper a few years ago and came out of retirement for a couple of seasons, the only people interested in buying them were Falconers to feed their birds so you cant use a shotgun anyway,we used airrifles and head shot them, the bloke who bought them had one of those metal detectors used by bouncers to check for knives,he ran that over them and removed any pellets left in them.

Found this vid, pretty good for 3" mags

fish

still loud enough!
tyke

still a bit loud for my liking but who uses 3" inch mags for pheasants?

Put a 2" through that gun and it would be ok on a good windy night i think.

With some powder took out and an end mounted jobby ive shot within 80 yds of the keepers cottage, just makes a whoosh sound, even his dogs never stirred.
BigCharl

I've had a mooch in tinternet now and found that eley make a fourten 2" and a fourlong 2.5" felt wading so I'll try them to see if there any better shouldn't matter for the rabbit I cant see the lack of powder not stopping one don't think I'll be taken any geese with um tho lol. Charl.
