MuntjacWell I was lamping last week and we saw 6 muntjac within 2 fields so as I am meant to do the muntjac control on the estate, the keeper was threatening to shoot them on the lamp. I put him off the idea and was out at daybreak the next morning and saw no muntjac but managed a fox at 246 yards in the same field as the pheasant pen with the .22-250. That kept him quiet for a couple of days but I was out again this morning at 5.30 and went for a stalk. Saw nothing at all and climbed up an ash tree to wait until 9 o'clock. At 8.45 I noticed 2 munties running down the far hedge (it is a big field) and eyed them up through the scope but decided they were too far and tried a bark but they disappeared into the hedge. They re-appeared marginally closer and I went for the shot. I wouldn't normally post about shooting muntjac as there are so many round here but this was one of the longest shots I have attempted. I paced it out at exactly 370 yards.
Back out tomorrow and sunday so will keep you posted.

Thanks all, had a friend over from Birmingham for the weekend so not had chance to reply.
I was out again at 6 on saturday morning but saw nothing in the thick fog we had here, then went ferreting during the day with my mate for 4 hours and ended up with 20 good rabbits, pleased with how the new ferrets are working as everything bolted quickly.
Tried lamping sturday night but it was a waste of time with the fog and we thought it would spoil this morning's stalk-my mate has never shot a deer and really wanted to see if I could get him a chance.
In the second field of the morning we spotted a muntjac buck around 400 yards away and started the stalk. Anyone who's had anything to do with munties knows how wary and secretive they are but the lie of the field meant it was either a long shot or a very close shot if we pulled the stalk off. Well we stalked it to 70 yards and it proceeded to come another 20 yards closer to us before my mate felt steady enough to take the shot with me whispering in his ear all the time to take it steady and wait until he was happy as the last thing you want is to wound a deer. I'm happy to say his shot placement was perfect and the buck dropped on the spot. We went back to mine and I butchered mine from friday morning whilst he copied me and did his.
We got the ferrets out again for 2 hours this afernoon and took another 7 rabbits before he had to set off for Birmingham with a boot full of wild meat.

Chas is the one posing mate, I'm only in 1 photo! It was just one of those weekends where everything went really well, we used to ferret 3 days a week when we were at uni and haven't done it together for several years.
The muntjac was the icing on the cake for him and I find I get more pleasure from helping genuine people out than doing it myself really. He wouldn't shut up about it all day!

You're a long way away mate! Let me know if you're ever near and I'll see what I can sort out. If I'm ever over your way I'll bring you some but I don't get much work near you. Shame you don't deal with Willem or you'd have had some ages ago.
