Hi guys,
Hoggit should be a year old, Mutton older and lamb should be under a year, the lines are very much blurred these days all you can be certain off (if your lucky)is you are eating a Sheep!
one sure way of getting mutton is if you live near an Asian or Caribean comunity to add to the cunfusion they sell it as Goat!
sorry to dive right in on my first post this is a great forum! I couldnt resist

theirs only one butchers near me that sells mutton, luckily while working at a farm up in scotland earlier in the year the shepherds gave me a load of mutton they didnt want.
All i did was put it in with a couple of chops onions, some chopped turnip, couple of carrot diced up, one potato chopped up and a tiny bit of chicken gravy in, top up with water then lieft it in the slow cooker for 36 ish hours......it was gorgeous. nothing better.
unfortunately though nowadays the butchers only seem to get popular cuts of meat in and only lamb is normally available.
People dont know what theyre missing out on!

Mutton is a cheap meat, but once you factor in the £2000 gas bill to cook it you may as well have lamb!
