My Irish trip. This happened quite a while back in the year but I thought I'd share it with you chaps.
The family and I went to Ireland last Thursday till Sunday, which is why I have been absent from here. We stayed with the wife’s family in a to say the least rustic cottage!
I wanted to take my gun with me but after a few preliminary checks it was soon obvious we would be back before my gun got there! But Irish brother-in-law Richard came to the rescue as he has quite the collection of firearms. The cottage was falling down to be honest, no central heating just a log fire which incidentally stunk rotten because they have 4 dogs whose favourite place for a slash n crap is the wood pile.
Irish Brother in law Richard is a testimony to self sufficiency, there is nothing he cannot lay his hands on, He has no qualms about poaching in any manner at all. If he wants it he will take it.
So anyway first I’d like to tell you about the sea fishing trip we went on. We or I should say he was after a fish or two on Friday morning, he has a boat at Brek head which is about an hour away from the cottage, My wife did not want to go as she had about 6 years worth of talking to do so I left her to it. We got to the boat around 7 am but not before a quick shopping trip in which he bought 2 throw away BBQ’s and 4 cans of the black stuff. We got on the boat and set sail for America as apparently “its joost a tones trow away!!!” Not really we was heading roughly a mile out into the Atlantic after some fish that’s Red, don’t ask me its name, he did say but I have forgotten.
Anyway the old sea was a tad choppy and I was beginning to regret agreeing to this fool hardy exercise, but he said it would be fine once we was out into deeper water. I was beginning to suspect we was possibly cracking a law or two as Richard spent most of the time peering through a pair of binoculars at the shore line. Anyway after around 40 minutes we arrived and Richard got the kit all set and cast out. He told me to light one of the BBQ’s as breakfast would soon be on its way, so that’s what I did unfortunately I did not take the cardboard off the edge and it was not long before it was well alight and also a tarpaulin that was in range as well. I calmly asked Richard where the fire extinguisher was, he replied by saying we haven’t got one and to use the stuff that’s outside the boat as it will do the job just as well. I found a bucket and filled it with sea water and poured it over the fire. Richard informed me that was why he bought 2 BBQ’s with us.
After about half an hour the first fish was sizzling away on the BBQ and shortly followed by another fish that was not red but tasted nice anyway, We caught about 17 fish all in all, well he did I just stood there freezing me tabs off!
We chugged back to land, moored the slightly charred boat and headed back to the cottage with the fish. I asked him why he kept an eye on the shoreline all the time and he calmly told me just in case the owner of the boat was following! That would explain why he was not too perturbed with me torching the boat with a throw away bbq.
