My Pup Shep

I was out for our morning walk, with Shep, he is only 11 weeks old on sunday, his breeding is 3/4 greyhound x1/4 beardie collie, at this age he is full of character, and stands at 15" we go for a walk around Hoddom Castle, beautiful grounds, woodlands, and the river ANNAN,I allow him to run free, and be himself, scenting and smelling, all foriegn, materials, as we are going around the castle,I hear a pair of Mallard ducks, on this onamental, pond I wander over to have closer look, this pond has a wall running, around the outside of the perimeter, it stands about 20" high, and in the centre there is a rockery made up of natural rock and earth, I am  looking to see if the mallards are trying to build a nest, the next thing I see the Pup take a run and a flying Jump, over the wall and into this pond stinking water and all from ground level to the water is about 3 feet, I was amazed, at his spectacular, jump, clean as a whistle, down into this stinking stagnent, water, I bend over and pull him out, you can imagine the stench of him, in one sense, I am so pleased at his bravery, and on the other, hand I look at what could have happened, IF I had not been there at that precise moment, ((( I believe in my pups coming along in a natural way, they learn a lot faster, and with no stress,)) I make for the car as quick as we can the car is a good mile away, we get there double quick as he is flying around trying to keep warm, into the car and home, his first shower, a good job I had some dog shampoo on hand, wash and dry, and after all that, excitement, we were out for our wee walk again this morning, (((( but NOT AROUND THE POND,))))

I never bought him a lad bred them, he kept two back a dog and a bitch and I got the dog he came from Spennymoor, co durham, a farmers son,
he bred them,

I thought I would put his photo onto this topic, its remarkable, how time flies, I remember fishing him out of the pond with my heart in my mouth, and this is him 6 months later a grand old age of 9 months + a couple of weeks,

that dogs in realy good condition mate, dont forget some pet insurance, these longdogs have a habit of damaging themselves! i just got a vet bill for £200!doh
Border Lad.

yes I have had to pay a couple of visits to the vet
he was hunting something in the wood about 4 weeks back, and he came back with a hole in the inside of right hind leg, I could have put the top of my index finger in the hole, ikept it clean salt water
and all but I decided, to take him to the vets for antibiotics, one injection, 1 small bottle of antiseptic
powder, £35.00 for less than 3 minutes work, she said by rights, required stitching I asked how much
about £70.00 I said leave it I WILL TAKE CARE OF IT, the antibiotic was the main important one, but for any one has a simmilar cut/hole I use HYDROGENPEROXIDE, WORKS WONDERS, and heals very quickly, and I use the udder cream that the dairy men use on the cows teats works very well too,
tyke

Border lad,

Hes lightned up a treat,i thought he would be heavier looking at the earlier photos, although photos can be misleading sometimes.

I used to have terriers and second the use of Hydrogen peroxide 100%,but some info on dilution should accompany it or someone could use it neat, the antibiotic wound powder is very good as well imo, dries wounds out and seals them from infection very well, you can buy it at a reasonable price on the net, much cheaper than the vets.
Border Lad.

Hydrogen peroxide I use 9% vol, comes in small bottles, you can even make up as a mouth wash and for treating skin abrasions, on humans,  and I forgot makes good tooth paste, mix with baking soda,(( true,))  check it all out on google and for a
fraction of the price you will pay at the vet, and it will explain a lot more about its healing properties
than I can,
tyke

Ive had 20% and 30% if i remember right,i was told to dilute it 2 to 1 20% and 3 to one 30%,ive used it on myself and its good stuff.

Its brilliant for hard to clean punctures,i just dilute it and inject it [no needle] into a puncture and all the crap fizzes out and it seems to cauterize the living flesh,a real bonus to anyone who hunts quarry that bites back.

You are right about it being used as a toothpaste as well, apparently a lot of Americans use it regularly,it obviously bleaches your teeth white, not tried it though.
Rhodie

Picture the scene...Court 1 Old bailey....

Prosecutor: "Now Mr Al Qaeda, please tell the court why you needed to purchase 30 gallons of hydrogen peroxide"?

Al Qaeda: " I have 3000 lurchers down the garden"
Border Lad.

yes I believe the boys can make good fuel out of it
with the right formula,of course, from healing bad wounds, rocket fuel, and creating massive explosions, a great invention and discovery, of modern medicine, ((( for treating internal cancer,
to teeth and gums, genuine read all about it on google,
Border Lad.

we were out for an early, morning mooch, on sunday, just as the dawn was breaking, we were on Hot, land, Shep, 10 month old now, and my mate
with his bitch, grey/whippetx saluki, 2 year old, I wanted my pup to be on something stronger, blacktip, or a hornie, in the first field my pup is hunting away very nicely, working very well, the next, a black tip jumps, a good run for both dogs my pup is still very unbalanced, being thrown wide on almost every bend, the bitch does her job, and the pup is there to, we have to take cover the farmer is taken his dairy, herd in, we wait for a good 15 minutes, and then we proceed, SHEP is hunting in a small round wood, the next a hornie comes flying out of the wood but hits the top wire as it is in a panic, with shep behind it, a couple of sharp turns, with the bitch, shep is being thrown wide on the turns, (( but it is all part of his learning curve, the next, hornie hits the wire again, and this time it is all over, it is time for us to get out and go home, my pup was showing the bitch how to hunt , but the bitch, showed the pup how to finish the job,
Border Lad.

the Pup caught his first rabbit on the lamp, a good run, a turn, and then he had him and retrieved, back to hand, on his first run of the night, he hit the rabbit and over run him, the fellow who I was out with, has a very handy dog 3 year old collie x with a smidgen of saluki, in him, 12 runs 12 rabbits, a very handy dog, all retrieved back to hand alive, now people will say, of the pup a couple of rabbits is nothing, but believe you me, this pup has been encouraged, to hunt, away from me, in the early dawn, of the morning, and hunts very well considering his age, and now he is being held up to walk to heel again in the hunting field, and to return to hand as quickly as possible, and to be put back on the lead, again, and have him under control, it feels as if his FREEDOM, has been taken away from him, but when he was watching the other dog, how he came back so quickly with rabbit an all, to heel, it was a great learning curve for him
to watch this very good work, and I hope when he has a bit of experience, about him, he will be able to do the same and more, ((( and I was able to stop him from Hunting on, but we have a long way to go be fore he reaches that grand status, but he has come along way in a short time, from the jump in the pond, to his first daylight rabbit and now his first one on the lamp, (( it was a grand night as they say up here, I dont know who is the most happiest me or the dog??
confused

SUPERB !! Well done Shep , in answer to the question who was the happiest = you   , it's great when it comes together for a young dog, you are filled with expectation for the future , as you say it's long road until he becomes a grand dog ? what is a grand dog ?? i reckon that your a bit like me ,as long as he suits you thats what matters, i've said before i never owned a super dog who could do everything, but then again the dogs never had a super owner   but we have had some fun on this journey
Keep up the good work and keep the posts coming.
Border Lad.

thanks Confused, yes it is very rewarding, when the jig-saw starts to come together, and he is only starting to lift his leg, when he is releaving himself, only a pup, with a good hunting life in front him, thank you once again,
Border Lad.

I was out first light this morning, SHEP and I making our way down to the usual field a nice field running along side a wee river called the Mien, that runs into the river ANNAN, with all the rain we had over the weekend, the wee river was in full SPATE,
good for the river bed, keeps it nice, clean and healthy, I am paying more attention to the river, and I see the pup hunting around some small Whin bushes, this is about 100yards or more from me the next thing I see him racing, towards the far fence, but sadly the field has a dip in it and I can not see fully was it going on, the next thing I hear the familiar, squealing, oh he has something, I don't want to walk to him, I wait for maybe a minute, although it seemed to be a lot longer,  he comes to the top of the dip nothing in his mouth, I give him the command, to go out from me, he does go back
and I am slowly walking towards him, and calling him to fetch it, slowly he is coming towards me with the rabbit, I stop and encourage him to come to me, but he is wheeling around with it so I start to walk away from him, I am looking out the corner of my eye, he is coming with it slowly, then I come to old gate lying, about 45deg, angle I clamber over the pup is with me rabbit an all, he slides through the bars of the old galvanised, gate, then we have about, 40yards to walk, to the next gate and the road, at that gate I took the rabbit from him, the gaps between the bars of the gate were smaller, and I thought he will try to slide through or he will jump, he slid through, he was looking for the rabbit again but this time I put into my inside poachers pocket, A happy man, and one happy dog, just out for his mornings exercise,

i use contact lens sterelizer which is 9% hydrogen peroxide and is quite cheap, also once the wound starts to heal , i use tea tree oil in water to keep the wound clean and i have a friend who keeps terriers and he has had some fantastic results with that combination

Sunday morning, out for our walk about 7.15am,
I decided to have a look at this wood near me, its mainly hardwood, chestnut, oak, beech, and some Hazel, with rhodendrum, bushes, and some very nice holly trees, with some thick under growth, there is road going through the middle of it, well a tractor, track, so we are going on nicely then Shep stops, puts his nose in the air, and in a blink of an eye lid he was off, I could only see top of the head
a black tip, there was a turn then a thump, I could see all, SHEP hit a tree, what a smack it knocked him back at least 6 inches, a yelp then he carried on I thought oh he is in trouble, he gave chase but he lost it in the thick undergrowth, when he come up to me he looked a bit seedy, but OK, after a few minutes he is chasing a rabbit this time, this time he disappears, for about 5 minutes, I can hear some rustling, noise, and when he comes up to me
he has a rabbit, he carried the rabbit to about 5 yards of me, when I got the rabbit of him, I see it had mixy, one eye was clean, the other had a white scab above the eye and it was closed also the cheeks were swollen, so I think it was recovering from that horrible disease, but Shep did not know the rabbit was sick he thought he had done a good job, now two things, were I live there is a lot of woodland, and the Blacktips, are lying up more in the woods than they are out in the open fields, and also the Hornies are in there as well, I have been encouraging, him to hunt the woods from a very early age, to try and eliminate, these type of accidents, and to get used to running through this type of ground, and undergrowth, in all we had a good walk, He had very good exercise, maybe a bit sore but nothing more,
confused

Aye Shep's learning every time , that's what its about with any dog get them out, get them with you, sometimes you think they never done anything today , but a dogs just like us always learning.

Good news,....and,.."Every day is a School Day"......
Border Lad.

for a 3/4 bred he has a very good nose on him, you would have enjoyed his style, how he stopped
sniffed the air, and then off like a bullet, and as you say, everday is a school day, I can envisage good days ahead of us, I was out this morning early hard frost, and we saw 3 deer, no rabbits they must have all been holed up, with the first real frost,of this back-end, if he had another year on his back, I would have set him out for one of those, ((
that is a+ factor, of your Lurcher being able to hunt
and this fellow can go round a good 20 acre field
with no problem, and if I can stay on top of him when we are out lamping, he will be ok (( I have had him out twice on the lamp, and he never let me down, If we get a bit of wind this week, I will take him out on the lamp again and see what he does, for a few bunnies,

He sounds to be a corker

You are 100% correct,...there is nothing better than seeing a jukel lift his head and start sucking in the air,..each breath tells him something is around,..and things could 'kick off' at any moment

I've a young pup here myself,.and I must admit to being real excited about her early promise,.and same as yourself,.I'm going to savour every moment..I like to watch her hunting up ,.only to stop dead in her tracks,.almost freeze,..and give me that look,..a glance that says,,.'He is here Boss'...For me,.'marking is paramount'....obviously I would like to actually catch something occasionally,.. ..but,..as a pro-rabbitter I genuinely cannot function without a wee bit of help ...

Early days yet,..but hopefully,.touch wood ...exciting times ahead for us all...
Kind regards,...DROVER...
Border Lad.

Monday morning,16th of November, well were did this year go to,as you get older time seems to fly,
I Was out this morning with Shep, after all the rain we have had, the fields are very wet, even the usual
tracks that I take are squelching, due to all of the rain we have had, So shep, is hunting away as usual, He puts a rabbit up out from under, a small whin bush, about a 25 yard run, and he nails it thump he goes head over heels, with the rabbit in his mouth, but I could tell he was going to nail this one with the speed and determination, he showed, he played around with it, for a good two or three minutes, again I am about 80 yards from him, calling him, down on one knee, clapping to get his attention, eventually he comes to me, WITHOUT, the rabbit, I send him back he goes back with out any problems, starts to play with the rabbit again, it is now looking like a rag doll I try every thing I know to get him to carry that rabbit to me, but NO,he did not want to carry this rabbit to me,so eventually SHEP SCORED 3 POINTS, he did not carry to me, I was very disappointed, after all his good work, he would not carry that rabbit to me, when you are training a dog, you get him to do something for you, you score 1 point, when he does
not obey your command he scores 3 points,, he knows how to fetch, he understands how to carry, he has done all this before and on the lamp he carried back to hand, and again so disappointed, that after all his good work, and a real strike, that is very important, and the last hurdle just to carry back to hand, the easy part, and the most pleasing
to the owner, ah well it is a Monday, worst things could have happened, ((( thank you to DROVER  for his compliments, and to all,
DROVER

Yes,..could be a LOT worse...

Firstly,.its good to hear that a fellow lurcher enthusiast can also feel that genuine pain within,.when things don't quite go to plan....
Been there myself on many occasions

Such an admission is often a shock to guys who don't get so involved with the jukels,...and in truth,..many lads would be over the moon with a young lurcher simply catching something,.anything...

For some folk,.owning a lurcher is a fleeting thing,..a whim,..and a phase that they go through,...and then they move on...
I've seen this a lot over the last 50 years,.and it is the way of things  BUT,.if you want to own what I would call an old style, mouching type of cur,.then hunting up,.marking,..catching and subsequently fetching is obviously of great importance...
My advice would be,....'let sleeping dogs lie',....

Take the youngster out for his exercise,.but choose somewhere with NO GAME or temptation,..and start back on with the old fluffy dummy business again...There is no great hurry to get the sapling entered on live quarry,..coz you KNOW what he can do,...so maybe let him be a wee pet for a couple of weeks,...then you can go back to the real world with confidence...

Go careful now,...all the best,...DROVER...

I have always had a dog to carry, able to carry a 7lb, Blacktip, come over a five bar gate with it and also over the stone walls, wee Tinker, she would carry up to the fence and nose them through, she would jump the fence and pull the blacktip through and carry back to your, hand or up into the van, I enjoy to see a good dog carry back, in all truth it is the least they can do, so I have to ease him of a bit, he is a bit Hyper, very strong headed, and to end on a good note, he did strike like a cobra, which every one knows, is very important,

You are quite right to slow things down with the youngster,...it is difficult when you have one that realy wants to do the business,.but,..he is young,..you have plenty of time in your favour...

Hi, i reckon that your spot on ,just slow him down a bit , he's got the idea of what its about so it wont do him any harm to not get a kill for now,hes just a baby yet, take that new stick of yours and just go for a walk or two with him and get it back to basics ,whats a few month in the big picture ? i feel like i'm telling my granny how to "sook eggs " but you know what i mean. hes a topper and a wee wait now will be worth it in the end . It's good that guys can offer encouragement to their fellow enthusiasts.

We have all been there ,.especially with young saplings

I cannot remember schooling any young lurcher in my life,.when things have gone to plan,...there is always some fecking thing waiting round the corner to bite yer bum..

Good thing is with Shep,.he isn't one of those poor unfortunates,.that,.no matter what you do,.no matter how much training you impart,.still cannot hack it,.due to his physical limitations...

This is a bummer,.and I have been in the position where I suddenly realised that my new creation,..although bright as a button,.cannot fecking run

Shep looks to have all the right equipment,..and a great future..

Thanks for sharing the ups and downs with us all im enjoying reading of Sheps progress.

Im training my youngest lads dog at the moment, hes 91/2 months and very similar to shep,a bit smaller but nearly identical [ i cant post pictures] im using passive training methods and letting him do things as hes good and ready,im fairly optomistic about him all the right signs are there, its just a matter of being patient i think.
Jaybird

Been training two young coonhounds ,a Black and Tan,and a Bluetick, for the last 3 weeks almost every night. They are coming along real good. The last 4 nights they treed coons every time out and did a good job on track and tree.
Border Lad.

To Tyke, good luck with your young fellow, hope every thing works out well,  Jaybird= Welcome to the JACKS SHED, the only time I have seen Coon hunts, is on films, like the Kentuckian, Burt Lancaster, was the main actor, back to Shep if by fortune, had him out for a couple of walks yesterday
mainly on the lead, and on a tight reign, we come to this field, I know there is nothing there, I have never seen anything there, for a very long time, he is running about scenting but nothing only birds, and our way home I see some blood, he cut his back pad on hind right leg, it is straight clean cut like a knife cut, so I have to keep him up for 4or5
days, at least, I never heard him yelp and he is not limping, but quite a bit of blood,
tyke

One of my favourite all time films is "Where the red fearn grows"

Its about a young lad who trains and hunts with 2 Coon hounds, well worth a look if you can find it,thought that might be worth a mention.

Lamping weather

It's good to get out,....mind you,..the novelty of having so much rough weather localy,.is starting to wear off ...

In fact,.I'm well sick of it..

It's great for the lamping,..but I've got a fair bit of ferreting to get done and dusted before Xmas,...(I need the vonga )..and these high winds are messing everything up,.big time....!

Mind you,..for anyone with a youngster to bring on for the lamp,..this is a golden opportunity, and one not to be missed...

Shep ran 4 and hit 2 he ran well, the other dog is a first class, lamping dog, he has a great strike, but he is 3 year old, with plenty experience on his back,
and he was bred, from working stock on both sides very important, shep stands at 27" and only 11 months old, what pleased me most, he was running well, and able to hold and turn well with the rabbit,
I hope now this bad weather, has settled, and you can get a bit a ferreting done in peace,

Getting colder

Yeah,.the wind is dying down,.gradually

I've got my own pup to get out, and try to mould her into my way of doing things...
For me, as a ferreter,..its all about the marking game,..and obviously the pup's temperament to wait patiently,.'up top' for the bolt..

Some dogs don't take to this,..and as per usual,.it's horses for courses.

Shep looks to be shaping up nicely,...and as you know,..it generally takes at least two summers on their backs to get a male lurcher right

It's good for him to be around a top class performer,...

I agree, its around 2 years old, when the dog is really on your wave length, a snap of the fingers to bring him up to attention, or click of the tongue, but last night, this dog is already, boxing them, in keeping them of the hedge, he done that with 3 of his rabbits, 2 he clicked, and the 3rd  he should have had but for a mouthful of water he struck at it and hit the water, these large pools of water that's lying, in the fields, it was wet, but I really enjoyed it, especially for the other fellows dog, he worked very well, I am not a numbers man, I have more satisfaction, in seeing a good dog work, and a sapling, trying to do his job, and I like to see a good rabbit dog, work hunting and marking, and telling you were the rabbit and the ferret are when you are holed up, but you have all this modern technology, in the ferret collar,

Locator

Well,.I'm all for modern technology,.if it helps me to do my job quicker,.but I get yer drift...

Joke was,...a few months back we were ferreting a large warren up on the Downs...
It was real deep,..no chance of digging through six feet of flint and chalk,.just to pull out a couple of rabbits,.so we just used the locator box to let us know where the ferret actually had his prey..

Suddenly,..Horror of horrors,...
The box had gone silent,..batteries dead,.finito,.kaput...

My old pal turned to me and said,." What the feck are we going to do now"
...he was genuinely concerned,..worried even...

I gave him a smile and replied,..."What did we USED to do"

   No probs....
