I think a shuttle is just a generic or geographical name for a needle,I know trawler-men who call a needle a shuttle, but bear in mind one thing, theres quite a few differing designs of needle, but they all do the same thing, seen them made from plastic, wood, bone, metal but their basic function is still the same

Two different names for the same thing. If you Google "netting needle" and "netting shuttle" you will get diffetent results but they are identical. (try a Google image search as well) Tony

Get hemp,if you want 6z or 4z nets buy them ready made mate, remeber,it needs double-knotting.

bit tachnicle for me! but if you manage a good deal on twine ide be intrested in buying some! i think matt the rat uses spun nylon as it only needs single notting .

Spun is only single-knotted fish

In the 'what do you make section' There is a sticky about purse net making.....
In that link it says single knotted for hemp and double knotted for nylon to stop slipping, which I suppose stands to reason as nylon is slicker than hemp.
I made some nets a few years ago and its really addictive, you just want to keep making more. The hemp ones are easier to make but it still makes your thumb sore..!!!!
You should have a go at it, its really quite easy when you get the hang of it and the instructions in the above link are pretty good....

Poly spun can be single knot ed

Don't buy 4Z nets mate they're rubbish! If you must buy nylon nets don't go lower than 6Z better still are 10Z.
Personally I like the spun nylon nets that I make myself
