Made this bow with my lad a few years ago,it's tempered steel (had to use titanium and cobalt drills on it)the wood is 50+ years old beech, and the cord is for mountain climbing,I think we tested the pull at 19kgs,home made but effective

and completely legal where you are to hunt  with it!
Jack Russell

It was 6.30 am i had just pulled up in front of my house from my usual morning walk out with the air rifle over the woods and fields  when a lad passing with a lurcher asked me what i done with all the rabbits he kept seeing in the back of the van as he passed.  He wanted them for his dog and ferrets.  From that morning we built up a wonderful friendship whereby we would take each other on the others land for a bit shoot.  One day he said have you ever been hunting with the bow and arrow, I said no had never held one except as a young boy.  Not to far from us is a couple living in the woods in their own hand built wooden shack/hut.  Mike had bought ferrets from him in the passed and new that there were wild boar in the woods as they were escapees from a nearby farm.  He asked The chap (I forget his name) if we could bring the bow and arrows up for a bit sport. He warned us to be very careful as they will charge if you don't get the shot placement just right ie. Kill it.

In the week leading up to our big day i done as much research as possible and watched footage of them, this made me feel very wary about the coming foray.  The big day arrived we got Mikes bows and loaded them in his pick up.  We headed up to the woods armed with a bow each and some arrows we wandered around carefully as if to be stalking our unseen quarry. about half an hour into our foray the small clump of bushes up ahead were moving as if something was in there! This was it game on we were in,  the hairs on my neck and arms stood to attention beads of sweat on my brow and fear mixed with excitement running through my bones.  We were getting closer and there was still movement in there it was if whatever it was hadn't noticed our approach .  The tension grew on the bow's and arrow's as we got ever closer all the while looking around for somewhere to run to or climb to if it went tits up.  I was petrified not being able to see what was moving them bushes so much.  As we got nearer the bushes Mike ushered me around the other side of them so if it came out one of us would get a shot at it, the bushes were approx 4 foot high so we had eye contact the whole while and nothing was coming out but still there was movement.  I was bricking it as Mike started to make noises as if to startle the quarry.  We must of been there for a good five or so minutes and seeing the rustling of the bushes, something had to come out soon.  Mike shouted out GEEAARRH The bushes were shaking like mad then stopped, still, nothing whatever was in there had now stopped to pay attention,  the stillness made me more scared than ever it was going to come charging out any second now, I was trembling and for a second I took my eye from the bushes to look at the puzzled look on Mike's face why was it so still, who was going to make a move first, Mike spoke to me breaking the deadly silence asking me to throw a stone in there.  I did this as quickly as I could then repositioned myself with the bow.  Nothing not a stir there was no movement noise or anything in them bushes now.  Mike said come on lets take a look. We slowly moved closer to the bushes i was praying that if it came out it would be on his side and I bet he was doing the same. My heart was pounding out of my chest as we got ever closer.   We checked those bushes from top to bottom there was nothing at all in there not even a rabbit hole to be seen. My relief must have shown as Mike said "you ok"  Yeah fine mate, I said.  He knew I was scared.  We walked away scratching our heads in disbelief at what just happened.  I think it must of put Mike off a bit too as we just headed straight back to the pick up no mention of any more stalking.

the above is obviously fiction,  as it is illegal to hunt wild boar.

thanks for reading
