old ways

Right lads apart from prebating what have you tried
Did this a few times when after perch got a big sweet jar with minnows in on a rope and placed in the edge of the trent the night before.
Had a few good stripeys that way.
a good mate of mine uses rabbit gas in the river for salmon and trout

Cymag is only really useful upstream in pools or narrow river systems it wouldnt be any good in estuaries etc if your after fresh run fish, always preferred nets, gaff etc myself, and I have taken thousands of migratory fish in the past, they are more discriminatory and less destructive methods:smt049
I have seen Cyanide used for stunning reef fish for the marine aquarium trade but even that now is dying out with the advent of barrier nets and more sophisticated methods of capture, because of its mortality rate and it kills off the coral reefs.
Horses for courses I guess

How exactly do you use a gaff Tidalwear?  I know it's a hook on a stick, but how do you attract the fish in?  Use lights?  Or do you just look for a fish and gaff it quickly?

I agree with you Tidal wear definitely over the top
Hoping to extend my salmon fishing skills this year its something ive got to have a go at my mate nets as well
Another lad i know has been getting some decent sized salmon out of the trent they are keeping quiet about how many are running these days but its getting at them you could do with a boat.
Hes been nicked twice fishing in the wears best fish weighed 15 pound and hes lost bigger hes just using rod spinners and worms.
Its either theyve come up as the river has got much cleaner or theyve been released either way it dont cost for a day ticket as no one hardly fishes the stretch where they are.
Funny you should mention lights fishy1 we struggled getting trout out of the derwent til we learnt to put a torch on the water a bite a chuck then.
Tidal wear what would you reckon is best on the river its too deep to wade i suppoose it could be netted but theres loads of barble there as well.

I have lamped fish Juckler    Not so long ago either, dont gaff them nowadays though,I have a cast-net,had allsorts in it,rainbows,browns,pike,carp..............
I know what you mean about barbel,I netter upper stretches in the wear a few times and had freshwater fish as well as anadromous, barbel are bottom feeders though, deep water, shallow net rigged to fish the top?Your always going to get accidental catches, even had cormorants in mine.
You dont attract them with a light Fishy, thats just to spot them.

Ah, I didn't know that.  On a big river, do salmon lie close to the banks at night?  In the day?  Just because the local anglers generally wade out to fish deeper water, and I'd imagine spotting and gaffing a fish in 5ft of water would be extremely difficult.
Tidal_wear

Never gaffed them that deep mate, normally shallow pools, deeper water?Thats what a nets for or rod and line if thats your thing...................
