passaround book

on another forum i was involved in starting a  floating book library  the IDEA is that people put up books for passaround  how it works .
set up a section passaround someone lists a book  first person to claim it gets it sent sender pays the cost couple quid ??  next person reads book then lists it  ( signs it  )  posts who claims it next  sends book cost postage   READ BOOK FOR almost free this keeps going as long as everyone  is willing to cover the cost of posting on to the next person
seeing as your getting the chance to read a book worth MAYBE £20 for cost of £2-3  is it a big deal ?? DOES MEAN THAT YOU HAVE TO TRUST PEOPLE??

IF there any interest I will put up the first book  ragner bensons  survival poaching  depends on admin  sorting out the details  cheers
fish

I LIKE THE IDEA OF THIS , i think a time limit should apply or some chap will put it on his book shelf and not get round to reading it for a few months.
dugaboy

mate i agree  how about they keep it for a week to tn days then it goes to the next person  if they have to post on here who its going to next we should be able to keep track of it  ( just nickname  ) cheers
fish

yep sounds good , i will lookinto getting some re -usable postage bags the type where you just slip a bit of card into a window , one less thing to worry about  ie getting a jiffy bag etc.
fishy1

For that book, I'm definately interested.  I am away starting the begginning of october though, will it get to me before then?  If not, I might just drop out of this and buy the book so I don't have it stuck at mine for ages.
dugaboy

mate if you want to start this off  PM an address   will post it asap  then you have to agree to send it  to whoever wants it next within ten days after  you get it  just sign it  add any comments  thats it  cheers
fish

can i borrow it after fishy1?

i am offering to lend my hardbound copy of  "A gamefishers days and ways" by Norman Hill.
it has a fine section on poachers and their ways!  if there are no takers on this book within the 10 days of the borrower it should be returned to me.
dugaboy

that should be all right mate as soon as he sends address will start the ball rolling cheers
fishy1

I have sent you a pm with my address dugaboy, cheers.

Hi
I got the book yesterday, it was a nice surprise having been up until about 6 am with some kind of viral infection.

I then read the book in about 4 hours.  I am a pretty fast reader.  I may reread it before I pass it onto Fish so I can just get a better understanding of all of it.

"lists it  ( signs it  )" - What do you mean, do I write my name on the book?  I am a bit confused, and perhaps do not wish my name to be knowledgable to everyone on the list.

Anyways, onto the book.  It is written in a very obvious, stereotypical american way.

Benson strikes me as an idiot.  He seems malicious, for example when a farmer is trying to stop him poaching him on his land, benson gets someone to put a bunch of fresh hides on the guys property, and then informs the authorities.  The farmer gets landed with a 2 grand fine, and ragner takes great delight in this.

Another incident demonstrating pure benson is when he sees a bunch of other poachers shooting deer at night, using a lamp.  Benson replys to them by shooting out there light, and is seemingly oblivious to the fact they miss the lamp twice, and could quite easily have killed the lamp operator.

"Survival poaching", this is not.  This is poaching with dynamite and rifles.  And dynamite features a lot in this book.  Benson also omits life threatening information, for example when making a blackpowder substitute with potassium chlorate and sugar, he fails to mention that the mixture will become phemoninally unstable near any sulphur (which you would find in a gun barrel).

The fishing section is short and disappointing.  Gill nets get a page and a half, seines are not mentioned.  Some of the information is quite interesting, for example hanging dead animals above the water and coming back in a week to catch the fish attracted by maggots falling off.

Gill netting birds is basically mist netting them, but it is the first I had heard of anyone doing it, so I will try this.

This is more a book for a wannabe trapper, as most of the information is about keeping the pelts in good condition.

And seriously, bear traps aren't a "survival" trap, more a moneyearner.  He explains how to sell what you kill, and how to not get caught, which is quite good.

Anyways, fish, pm me your address and I will send it on to you soon.  Thanks dugaboy for this excellent idea.
wabbiter

not much point in reading this now, thanx fishy
fishy1

Wabbiter, it does still have some interesting bits in it, just not what I was expecting.  A lot on catching beavers, muskrats, and bears, so not all that relevant.
Tidal_wear

Had both his books,"Survival Poaching" and "Hard-core poaching" neither were applicable to the UK,didnt learn one thing from the books except I should have saved my cash for something useful   The methods werent authors fairy stories like in the old UK so-called poaching manuals, but neither were the methods outlined overly useful either, just my 0.2 cents worth anyway
dugaboy

well mate like me you bought them to see if there was something to learn from them  would I buy them again NO  but untill you look you never know ??           TO THE BEST OF MY KNOWLEDGE  NOEWHERE IS THERE  AN INSTRUCTIONAL MANUAL  THAT CATERS FOR THIS MATTER  poaching by   nature is not something that is advertised  on a detailed scale    you could try checking out   buckshot
fish

well ime keen to see the yankee methods that i may be able to adapt to our native wild life (theretically!)
Tidal_wear

Theres a book being written and collated at the moment dugaboy, without doubt the most in-depth work on certain subjects ever written, not by a wannabee but a guy with incredible skills who really knows his art
Not like pat-careys DVD with fake trout-tickling but a guy everyone considers the real-deal,never heard one person criticise nor say one bad word about him because everyone knows he is the oracle on certain subjects, just wait a while,it will be on the shelves, money well spend
Gill-netting birds in Bensons book?We used to flight net duck, different concept, only ever caught cormorants in gill nets, but I dont think benson had much of an idea in that field to be honest
dugaboy

mate will look forward to that    his book survival gunsmithing is a better read  cheers

The lack of modesty?

Wait a minute, it must be be tidal wear's autobiography.

When's it coming out if you aren't having a laugh?  I am genuinely intreged, you have a lot of interesting stories and a few photoshopped pictures of guys with balaclava fetishes.

Fake trout tickling reminds me of a time fishing with rods in a good salmon river, we weren't getting much, so for a laugh a friend tries tickling under the bank.  I was so surprised when he pulled out a big wild brown trout of about 3lb.  It looked good, I was like "wow, you're amazing."  When I got closer to him, I noticed the fish was dead and had been so for a while.
Tidal_wear

Photoshopped?Surely you jest sir?
Wouldnt know how to photoshop fishy   As for modesty, well,I am not the one PM'ing me about netting fish one day, then setting myself up as an instant expert the next on places like bushcraft UK   You know I know my subject   Not my autobiography, sadly I cant write for toffee, but the book is indeed coming out
fishy1

So who is this expert guy writing this book then?
Tidal_wear

Need to know, wait a while like everyone else
fishy1

Well if it's recommened by you it should be good, just post it on here when you can if you want.
Tidal_wear

Jack Russell
