A few questions if you dont mind?
How old is the dog?
Does he do the same with rabbits/rats/squirrels?
Have you shot things and let him retreive/kill them?
Is he obediant besides being hard mouthed?
Has anything ever bit him ie squirrel/rat?
Have you got a mate with a well trained spaniel that retreives?
And how old are you?

Hey, so he pegged a bird; should be seen as a plus unless you are looking at working him on shoots.

It sounds like your dog has been given to much slack,at 4 years old it would take a real expert to do much with him imo,the only thing i could say is try to start again with the basics and be firm and make everybody in your family be firm with him.
Shame is he sounds like the kind of Spaniel that could be a very good dog with all that drive in him,but dont give up on him, some of the police sniffer dog trainers and army bomb disposal trainers turn dogs like him into very well trained animals so its not impossible.
The first thing i would tackle would be the lead pulling because off the lead you wont get a chance, you need to be able to stamp some disipline on him when he cant get away from you and when hes used to doing as hes told on the lead hes more likely to obey off the lead.
Dont just feed him either, make him sit before you will give him his food,if he wont sit dont feed him,it wont take long.
If you dont know how to teach the basics im sure plenty of people on here will have some good advice, but this should really be in the dog section, atb tyke

I dont really like the idea of electric collars, but in your dogs case it might be the only way to go?
Do you know anyone local to you who is good with dogs and willing to help you with him?

no we did take him to dog classes but the dog traner person pickd my dog up and threw him across the big dog traing hall so we never went back

We had a Russell terrier, the most stubborn, ignorant dog ive ever seen,
when we let him off the lead you would only get him back when he was ready or you could corner him,i felt like shooting him at times to be honest.
My eldest decided he was going to re train him[we didnt get him until he was 6 months old and the first owner didnt have a clue]
My lad kept him on a lead instead of letting him off on his walks, the dog wasnt happy at all, then he let him off but never let him get to far away, when the dog wouldnt come and we eventually caught him he was put on the lead and taken straight home and my lad just stuck to his guns and kept it up,never giving in to the dog, when he eventually did come back when called my lad just gave him some praise and then let him work the cover again without putting him on the lead.
It probably took a couple of months but eventually the dog realised that if he didnt come back when called he would be put on the lead and taken home,if he did come when called he would be back in the cover hunting again pretty quickly.
I know its a pain having to take the dog home if he misbehaves but i rekon he would soon learn so long as you stick to the rules, nothing will make him realise the error of his ways more quickly than stopping him hunting, its obviously his goal in life to hunt anything that moves and he will soon realise he wont be doing much hunting if he disobeys you.
If you follow this properly you will see a change in the dog within a week 2 at the most.

My last post deals with that very problem,if you do what ive said and dont give in to him he will come back.
The Russell my lad cured was an absolute nightmare,he may as well have been deaf, wouldnt come back if he was on a scent but eventually he learnt that if he didnt come out when called he would be going on the lead and home.It works if you do it right.
Give it a go youve got nothing to lose.
