QuestionsI see a lot of photos of people getting pheasants, and I have some questions. Do you shoot them on the wing, or on the ground?
I went pheasant hunting once with a sling shot a couple of years ago with my dog, an English Springer Spaniel, using a .5" caliber lead ball, and came pretty close (6") to hitting a flushed rooster, but never did it again, as I wasn't sure the wrist rocket had the power to kill a pheasant flying away from me. I had the "hunting" black band on.
I may have to get one of the hunting slingshots talked about hear, but I am wondering, has anybody captured a shot of a flushed pheasant on video? What is the percentage of time a good instinctive shooter can take a flushed pheasant?
I'd love to see some videos of actual pheasant or grouse hunts.

Shoot them while they're sitting - you're more likely to hit and more likely to kill what you hit.
Shooting at flying birds or running furry stuff with a single ball from a catty or a gun isn't 'sporting' it's an exercise in how to waste ammunition and go home without dinner.

I tend to have a ***** at flyers/runners if im in with a fair chance,but as Adam says you waste a lot of lead really,that said i rekon 50% of the squirrels i get are runners.
At this time of year the pheasents are pretty stupid,my dogs know the game and approach them steadily hoping to "tree" them,if that happens[it often does] they sit under the tree and wait for me to shoot at the bird,only problem is the whippet bitch barks when i miss,a bit later on when theyve been flushed and shot at a few times they get smarter.

theres a you tube of a guy hitting a pheasant in flight with a diablo,personally i havent shot one on the wing but it is posible as i shot a clay at the mendip shooting ground last february. by far the easiest way to get them is to shoot roosters,shine a torch on one sat in a tree roosting and knock him off its perch. its illegal to shoot after an hour after dark here and an hour before an hour before sunrise here. a red filter on yer lamp helps.

My dog flushes, so I don't think it will work out then. Stick to the shotty.

With a bit of training most people can hit a clay/pheasent pretty regularly with a shotgun,it doesnt compare with dropping something with a catty imo.
