Rats Problems....Ok, Hi first of all
First time posting here, great place by the way
Especially like the catapult section etc...
Anyway, Live in Swindon wiltshire.
We have had a problem with Rats for sometime now, originally coming up from the sewers into the house, but they stayed between the walls and did not come out !
Found where they were coming in and fixed it.
Now they are in the garden, mine and next doors and probably the whole section of terrace houses.
I have Chickens, rabbits and guinie pigs in the garden. The chickens are well protected and no rats can get in there at the moment.
Have seen a large one running around the rabbit run though and a smaller one attacked one of our rabbits the other day, because it wanted the food the rabbit was eating.
I have caught about 8 of the rats in a trap, but the biggest rat(s) seems to know what the trap is and stay away. I even went outside with my air rifle and it poked its head up slightly above its hole. It saw me and fled back into the hole soon filling it in afterwards....
So a question....
Apart from using petrol which is not an option here, I know smoking could be used and maybe possible, but are there any other ways apart from poison (dont want to use poison because of the animals in the garden and kids etc)?
I thought about camping out with my gun, but I really do not know where they are coming from, it might even be next door, who claimes they had a rat in their guinie pig cage !
Would love to get these rats, but need to find where they are coming from. So any information that you could give me to help out here would be good.
Thanks all...

Hmm, Thanks fish, I always wanted to keep ferrets but never got around to doing it. You have to keep them indoors though don't you?
Only other option is to find someone else who has them to do the job and get some poo...

Make yourself some tunnels for the traps and put them along the well used rat highways. Put them in place but withjout traps and leave them.
After a while introduce your traps but dont set them.and wait some more.
Then set your traps.!!! The most effective long term solution is poisen in tunnels to exclude livestock and kids.

Bait an area 20 yards from comfortable cover with peanut butter, or a tin of cat / dog food with holes in it so ratty can smell it but not get at it. Pick the rats off with an air rifle and keep up with the trapping. You could try different types of traps or snaring the runs the rats are using.
