road killRight then folks i have a bit of a dilemma
tonight on the way back to the car after walking the dogs i happen upon a
duck that had just been hit by what looks like a 3/8 lead ball
knowing this duck has just come of the CANAL and not wanting to waste
good meat i thought i should ask what you guys [and girls ] would do
should i just give it to the ferret or breast it then give it to the ferret
and eat the breast myself
what would you do
cheers stu

If the duck is fresh and has only been there a few hours then the meat should be fine. If it has a slightly sweet smell, then it could be starting to rot and should be avoided. Check the duck over for any maggots or fly eggs; again if it’s a fresh bird it should have neither.
When you are preparing the bird make sure that its organs are all intact – though this is more important with small critters than birds.
If everything checks out then I would eat it. It’s no different from what you get from the butcher; it’s a shame to think of it going to waste.
Let us know how it goes!

Ooh sounds like a terrible accident to me
Anyway, I always hang them up for a day or so in a cool place.
It enhances the flavour and gives the wife a fright when she opens the shed door!

wild duck is wild duck, the canal won't make the slightest difference to the quality of the meat, most animals drink from the canal, cows, sheep.deer it does'nt effect their meat...mack

Sounds like it should be ok if the livestock ect are drinking out of the canal,
we used to hunt/shoot the Don/canals around the Tinsley viaduct area, complete with the Blackburn meadows sewrage works,it allways put me off eating them, the ducks never shift from there its ideal habitat for them,so christ knows what they indjest?
Nice shot anyway.
