Salmon

I had a funny dream last night that goes like this.

I have been to a river and would like to get some salmon out.  The river comes out of a big loch.  Salmon run the loch too.  Would it be effective to put a gill net from the shore to 50 yards out in the loch, or should it be in the middle?  I wanted to put it in the shore as it's less visible and easier.  The loch is about a mile wide and 20 miles long and very deep and a funny man who knows these things tells me 100k salmon run this loch per year.  Should I set the net on the top of the water or bottom?  I thought the top?  Whenever I tried this in my dream the net either got washed round into a tangle or couldn't be untangled at first.  How can you store a gill net so it won't tangle in the bag?  Do you store it with weights on or off?  Is a leadline better?  The river is frequented by anglers so a gill net is not possible there, but in my dream I set a night line baited with pieces of trout about the size of sugar lumps.  I only had 4 hooks out for about 4 hours but when I came back in my dream I had one eel about 1lb and a lovely trout of about 3lb.  How can I modify this so I take salmon with it?  I've heard of using salmon eggs but I can't get hold of these until I catch a salmon and so it's a vicious circle which can only be broken by catching a salmon.
I've also heard of people attracting them with lights and spearing them, how would you do this?  Or with a large lump of lead and a treble hook?

Then I woke up.

Help would be appriciated.

I suggest the book "Principles of christian dream interpretation"     I normally dream of thong wearing nurses and Ann Summers body-chocolate,the book helped me immensly

Where can I buy this book?

And also, where can I find a serious answer?

Cheers

salmon caviar/roe can be baught at some supermarkets, usually in jars, ide try M&S or Waitrose first, failing that try some salmon egg 'fly's'.
there are one or two members on here who may well pm you with help about your 'dream'!

And salmon roe is the business for salmon?  Do I just put 3 or 4 eggs on a hook and put them out on a nightline?  Or does storebought stuff need other stuff done to it?

Found some on the internet, £4 for 50g!  Might see if M+S have it.

Whilst searching for sources, cam across this:

Salmon roe (1) Any person who buys, sells, exposes for sale or is in possession of any salmon roe shall be guilty of an offence, and liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding level 3 on the standard scale.
(2) Subsection (1) above shall not apply to any person who gives a reason, satisfactory to the court before which that person is charged, for being in possession of salmon roe.
(3) It shall be a defence for a person charged with an offence under subsection (1) above to prove—
(a) that the roe had been produced in the course of fish farming within the meaning given by section 33(6) of the Fisheries Act 1981 (c. 29); or
(b) that that person believed on reasonable grounds that it had been so produced.
(4) A person who commits an offence under this section may be convicted on the evidence of one witness.
(5) Subsection (3) above is without prejudice to the provisions of subsection (2) above relating to the circumstances in which subsection (1) above does not apply.

Would a satisfactory reason for being in possession of salmon roe be to fish with it?  EDIT:  I searched and found fishing with roe is prohibited.  All of my above posts relate to my dream.

ide try 2 or 3 at a time on a hook, that sounds about the right price,2 oz of roe is several hundred eggs!

Any small orange balls should work[ or so i've been told   ]

I think I might try drilling/meting a hoe in some orange translucent BB's and then thread/glue them on a hook and see how it goes.  Do you need to reel them in or just let them sit?

movement usually catchs there eye

OK I just thought salmon eggs don't normally move much,

Tried the supermarkets, none had it, some online shops have it buy postage is about £10, alot of money.  I thought about maybe using cod roe that comes pressed in tins instead?

I have cast a few lead "spinners" for salmon, each weighs about 5oz which should be enough to chuck out a good way and keep it down in fast currents.  Each is equipped with 3 5/0 sea fishing hooks (stuck in the lead) and painted a little to make it look like it could be for legit fishing  (Which, of course, it is.  I'm sure they will all be mouth hooked).  Pretty vicious things.

Does anyone have tips for using them?  Throw it out and jerk it in?  Do I let it sink to the bottom then gradually jerk it, keeping it on the bottom or do I rip it in fast?  Also, should I hook a salmon accidently on a place that's not the mouth, will it be harder to bring in?  Should I just use 18lb nylon, or go for something stonger e.g 4mm poly?  All tips appricated.  Cheers

Hello Fishy,

When you hook a fish sideways it will put much more pressure on your line / rod, so put on some strong line and use a powerfull rod.

Even when you hook a small one, it will feel like a really big one, because of the way it's going through the water.

The best way to use it; is to let it sink and then jerk it up to the surface, let it sink again and start jerking again    this way you are fishing it up from the bottom and you catch the fish wherever they are in the water.

Good luck and tide lines,

RB

Used rippers for grey mullet in victoria harbour, used to watch thechinese guys snagging loads from the huge shoals around the sewage outlets on HK island side, there used to be a few snack/food stalls which sold fishing equipment there,I had a few foulhooking them butit was never a method which excited me

I reckon if I use a rod, I'll use the big beachcaster.  When you say jerk it to the surface, do you mean by winding in line or by raising the rod tip?  And do you jerk it as fast as possible?  Also, is this method alot more successful than just spinning for them?

He, Fish,

You start tipping your rod, just as you were using a twister, from the bottom upwards to the surface , meanwhile you wind in the loose line, than you let the sinker drop again, and you start all over again.
When there are fish who won't bite you can use the above mentioned trick, I have used it on several occasions on a trout pond, when the fish refused to bite.
The more fish, the more change you have to hook one.

I use a sinker which I bought in Portugal, where they use it to catch squitt: just a sinker with needlepoints attached to the lower end.
When you hit a fish, you have to put pressure on the line, because the neddles are barbless, but you are using hooks so they will stick better to the fish.

Good luck,

RB

I had a dream where I tried it, didn't get one, stayed about 3 hours as it was cold.  Saw one salmon leap.  Line and hooks took a battering, lost one sinker and the hooks became blunt on the others, however not blunt enough to prevent me hooking myself, which hurt.

Your dreams are triggering your pain receptors as your brain thinks its real life, geta book on parapsychology fishy  Failing that fix your net, snagging is only REALLY effective with large numbers of fish running, otherwise your flogging a dead horse.

Do salmon generally run more at different times of day?  I know they like high water.

Early morning fishy1 and yes when tide is changing from low to high....
