shootshi there,
just a question about shooting
can anyone tell me why there are no ( or not many ) quail shoots in this country?
i understand that pheasant and quail will not live together, but from what i have read on American forums, quail shoots are big business out there and great sport.

i thinks it's illegal to release quail in the UK, that would explain why there is no shoots. Joe :smt001

that makes sense joe,i know of many an occasion when theyve escaped from breeders, never seem to set up a colony though maybe theyre just got by the predators too quick, you wouldv thaught that if parakeets have taken a roothold here they would! ive thaught about setting up a colony of wild turkeys around here!

Wild turkeys sound fun . We had some quail escape on our shoot once only about 10 or so. We had them in with some partridge at first but had to take them out because they kept getting killed by the partridge. once they were out and about we only saw them once on a shoot day. I cant really remember how they flew,, i think it was very good. Never saw them again after.
The same thing used to happen with the english partridge we released disappeared after a couple of weeks. Stopped buying them after a conversation with Mike Swan, apparently releasing english partridge does more harm than good to the wild population.

i knew someone who released quail on a shoot but they flew very bad dropping down to the ground after a short distance.

that would be because their wings had no strength, if they are kept in an aviary type structure where they can develop wing muscles they fly very well....straight up in fact, but you can very nearly tread on them before they will fly up.
the climate is ok for them here, as i keep quite a few outside in the winter.
they are part of the partridge family so they should survive ok in the UK.
just seems a bit of a waste as the Americans have such a great time bagging them, and they are quite tasty too.

Thats the one! only found this out by accident. I was looking a few years back to have some quail, person I was going to by from informed me that because they are not native to the UK they are not allowed to be released into the wild, Also they need to be kept warm in the colder months. (ie run brought in for winter)

There were attempts to release quail for shooting, back in the days when redleg partridge were introduced (another non native species). The birds didn't fair very well due to our cold and wet weather. Badgers, foxes, stoats, weasels and hedgehogs did nothing for nesting birds and every other predator killed the adults. They are a walked up bird not one to be driven.

No, pheasant are an Asian bird. Brought to this country for sporting purposes, many years ago.

Quaill is big sport and big business in America. In fact, quail hunting.. especially quail hunting in the "southern tradition" is very big business and expensive. In the south, we have almost exclusively Bobwhite Quail. The male has a black/white/brown head. But across this country there are quite a few different species? Gambel's, Scaled and California Valley Quail. I grew up quail hunting, wild birds, but different farming methods have wiped out so much of their habitat/cover.. the bird population in North Carolina.. where I live.. is greatly reduced. We have a few pheasants.. but only on the Outer Banks of this State.... none else where.. but pheasant hunting is a huge sport in mid-western states.. like South Dakota, Kansas and others.
