ShroomingAnyone into mushrooms very profitable nowdays and a good excuse if your caught out doing anything you shouldnt be doing.
Blewies 4 pound a pound
oysters 8 pound a pound
boletus 15 pound a pound
Folks are getting more at some restraunts but you cant knock it its nothing to pick twenty pound of field blewies there still out now.
Thats eighty quid for a walk round.

wow ! thats good money! when iwas a kid i used to sell giant puffballs to a resaurant, only made a quid each then! as yer obviously well informed on this subject do you think you could do a short piece on collecting? ie cutting not pulling etc?

i used to love mushrooming but i always ended up throwing away more than i was eating because i was never 100% sure what they where, pictures in books never seemed to match properly

I did it for a bit last year but I only got £10 a kilo for chanterelles. Where you sell yours? Restaurants? On a sidenote, have you ever had any that actually smell of apricots?
Also my biggest mushroom was a cep about a foot wide, shame it had maggots so I didn't sell it. Sidenote: Kebabing of mushrooms over a fire on sticks does not work. Trust me, it's awful. :)

You got any tips on morels Juckler? I never bothered going after them as I only used to go out in autumn time when you could make alot of money, but spring will be here soon and you seem like you know a bit.

|
Right lads i will get it together and post what i find when i find them with tips pics etc that should help loads.
As theres something to pick all year round more or less.
Blewits are still out and flushing [growing] both wood and field but probably for only another fortnight.
Best prices are at restraunts i did a bit of legwork and was suprised how many would buy fresh wild shrooms they seem to be in vogue at the moment.
Morels like you say mate are springtime fare we dont get a lot where i am in the midlands but the best spots ive found have always been on old railway lines near to town.
And the chantrelles ive found smell more of pinewoods than apricots but they do have a distinct aroma.

Wife was watching a cookery program earlier, they were discussing Truffles, white ones go for £2700 a kg?A 2kg white truffle recently fetched £165000 at auction.......................

Were the chanterells found in pine woods? Mine had a smell that wasn't unpleasant but not apricots or pine.

I thought mushrooms didn't come up when it was frosty, i.e winter.
|
juckler
|
It used to be weve not had a hard winter now for more than a few years.
I picked good amounts of blewies up untill feb for the last five years or more and had mushrooms nealy every month last year.
This season was slow to start as we had six weeks without rain right at the begining of autumn.
Picked my first horse mushroom in may of last year.
Once you know the species and the spots it gets easy to harvest all year round.
Theres a saying the last blewie comes up on boxing day that was how it was before the increased solar activity we are experiencing at the moment.
All the chantrelles ive picked have been in pines fishy1 weve a good lot of pinewoods and they hold a fair amount same as the boletus
Location is the key every time once you find them you can go back every year to the same spots.
Field blewits i fetch off the trent floodplain and assorted army bases as theyve had no sprays on them.
And wood blewits i look for old muck piles whats been dumped on the land or in hedgebottoms and under chestnut trees.
Im still learning even after a good twenty years or more but a lot are symbiotic with trees this can help with identification and where to look.
|

Yeah, I've got a good few marks for chanterelles. Unfortunately we would get frost most nights. Be good if you put in your guide what trees generally contain what mushrooms.

are they the field or wood blewits,i hav'nt seen either here in he north west

Field blewits mate easier to gather weight with them that lot was from three rings.
I would have thought they were all over the uk ive been no further than top of Kinder looking for them and there was a few good rings up there.
Funnily enough if theres a lot of rabbits it seems to follow there will be a good amount of different mushrooms.

Same here the spores can be used for a crude antibiotoc powder.
They taste best sliced and dipped in beaten egg.
