Snapping Turtleshey,
here's something a bit different for you guys in the UK as i don't believe you have snapping turtles over there? i start hunting and trapping them in early summer. they're mean critters and a big one can remove a finger with one snap. i hunt them by hand, with lines, and traps.
snapper meat is delicious and i also make things from the shells, tails, claws, and feet. i started getting snappers when i was 10 years old and i still look forward to it each summer.
here's a couple pics for ya.
take care,
wildman

We used to have a guy that brought animals to school now and again when I was a kid. He was rather imaginatively called "The Animal Man"! One of his perennial favourites was an alligator snapping turtle. Not sure if it's so named because it snaps alligators, or snaps like one but it was a cool animal.
Great pics WM.

steve,
the biggest common snapper i've ever caught was 38 pounds. i've heard "stories" of common snappers weighing up to 50 pounds, but funny thing is all who have made these claims never seem to have a pic of the snapper and if you ask to see the shell they will tell you it mysteriously disappeared.
the alligator snapper in the southern part of the US can grow up to 100 pounds but they are a separate species.
here's a few pics for ya.
a snapping turtle shell clock
a snapper foot necklace
a snapper tail neck knife sheath
a snapper head walking stick - unfinished
a osage knob stick with snapper tail
take care,

We do have feral populations over here and we have loads of red eared terrapins. The River Wandle, which runs into the Thames, has loads of them.

big trap! looks like its made of hemp, dont turtles chew through it?
|
asemery

Could be hemp. The one I made used binder twine (Baler twine for baling hay) and a 2" gauge. I found the directions in a book published by Jann's Netcraft.

I made mine turtle trap over 30 years ago, never used it but traded it for some pots from a potter I admired. Still use the pots. Have no idea if the trap is still around Tony

I remember whilst on a trip to the States watching some guys throwing a net into a pool, no bigger than a few yards, and catching loads of turtle, although they were after crayfish? or craws,or something like that, would they be snapper, they were only about 6 to 8 inches though

I used to fish for Carp in Hong Kongs new territories WOTW,some pools/lakes were a no-no as I was catching a turtle a cast, nothing huge but good fun for half an hour till the novelty wore off
Asemery, looks like a variation on a Fyke,do you bait them or add a "leader" to the front?
