Stick helpCut this hawthorn a while ago,and dried it out in my radiator cupboard over the winter,it has got a ***** in it,
i know it will weaken it a bit but it seems a nice bit of wood and very strong with no flexing.Had a mess about shaping the end(not fininshed yet)
Will it be ok or is it just an ornament now, only it seemed a waste not to use it,,,,if anything it's good practice
cheers in advance

was thinking about a bit of woodfiller, but maybe an antler insert(just waiting for some) is a good idea..
spent a good bank holiday afternoon in the garden with some files and a knife messing about with the top,was going to make a nobend but this shape just took over, you get a good grip and your thumb wraps round the sticking out bit...
very addictive

always try to cut longer than you need, that way if it splits it shouldnt affect the area your gonna use,, and leave the bark on..... i know it might sound a bit harsh but bin it and learn from your mistake... split wood will be weak and will split further when used..............

Nice stick , i would'nt bother to much with the split ,try running some glue in it ,but for me i would'nt use wood filler, i would rather leave it natural, as long as it is'nt weakening it ,i like the way it is .

cheers Yog,at least it didn't cost owt thats the beauty..
i left the bark on a Y i cut,
i removed the bark just because it looked better and was easier to work on(sanding...i'm lazy)..
think i'll try and make some spoons out of it.or leave it as an ornament and practice on it
just a nice bit of wood, shame really,,roll on winter,
cheers

I would try using "Zap-A-Gap" super glue on it, until the ***** was completely filled.
Then I would Whip over it with a fine strong cord, with a "Turk's Head" knot at each end.

you could also hammer some brass pins through it (like when attaching a knife handle to a blade) that should make it strong enough and will also add a nice bit of decoration.
it would be a shame to waste it ...its not that bad of a *****. its just a walking stick your not going to pole vault with it. but then i guess the woods will make more

i would just fill with super glue and sand it to fill the cracks with the same wood ,when dry, wire wool.

My personal "*****" at this is such: drill a small hole at each end of the *****. This will stop it from running any further. Next, collect some of the dust from your future sanding and after filling in the ***** with glue, sprinkle a litte on top of it and sand smooth. This should conceal things nicely and no one should ever notice.....except for me, as I am the one who told you this. It is the first thing I will see, and will stare at the entire time, nonstop....

if you pay my airfare and can accomodate,i'll bring it over to show you so you can see what a brilliant idea it was to do it your way,and if your a good host, you can keep the stick God loves a trier

i would cut the nobend of before the split gets to it and fix it to a totaly different type of shaft like darker or lighter but never ever remove the bark that always causes splits just lightly sand over bark

I am going on holiday after my hitch here on the boat ends....that is going to take up some of my off-time. I could use a hand with my catapult casting project and you'd probably love the Ozarks.
