ime 99% sre its a bittern.

mayfly

Also knwn as "Botaurus stellaris".

Very scarce and local resident with the main breeding strongholds in Lancashire and East Anglia. During hard winters, small influxes of birds from the continent occur.
Found in wetlands and marshes with extensive reedbeds.
Shy and secretive, with cryptic plumage that blends well into it's reedy home. More often heard than seen, it's deep booming song is often likened to the sound produced by blowing across the top of an empty milk bottle.

Oh Shit shit shit,

If that is a chick of one of these things be carefull, It may be a Great Bustard, recently re introduced to the UK from Russia, and guess where "Salisbury plain" Read about it on the RSPB site, there is a big Hoo Haa because one has reproduced and its the first eggs laid since 1832       They had a 24 hour watch on the eggs, Also why would anyone put all them rings on its legs, It could be a Stone Curlew as pointed out by Yoggerman, which are related to Bustards

Great Bustard

BUT................Look at the chick pics off the the stone curlew, very different to the Chicks off the original post.

The more i look at it, it does look more like a stone curlew, looked a few more pics off BITTERN chicks and their beaks are def longer, even at birth. But i decided to sit on the fence with this one as the beak on this adult Bittern is quite short as well.
