Not sure if I'm on the right section, but anyway....... Whatching Car Boot Sale today, (yeah, I'm a sad old fart !!!), there was a stuffed Mallard in a glass case, but the "expert" said it couldn't be sold, because it didn't have any provenance, i.e. that it was made before 1940 !!!! It this correct ??? I thought this only applied to things covered by CITES, like ivory and endangered animal skins etc. Does it cover EVERY stuffed animal ??
Cheers.

ime sure the stuffers on here will know!

you can buy most wildfowl and vermin with out any paper work its only when you get a protected bird or animal a certificate is needed. but any thing like you say pre 1947 is ok, as far as i know if you found say a barn owl dead on the road and stuffed it your self its ok to keep it as long as you dont sell it theres no problem, but its a good idea to keep a record where and when it was found also a photo if possible. but it has to have been killed by a vehicle, so if it looks like it has been shot leave it well alone or defra will stuff you well an properly in court
kent taxidermist
yup steves on the mark the mallard should of been alright though, as its classed as game bird
what you have to watch out for is 'road kill' badgers near cattle and dairy farms, you learn quite alot off of hand information when your living with agri boys
but to be honest the article 10 would be piss easy to forge if you were that inclined
and small 'nicks' in the hide are merely just skinning holes
but before defra come down on me like a tonne of bricks i do not carry out such methods and cleaner then clean when it comes to taxidermy
but steve mate your aloud birds if there window deaths, aka flown into a window or electrocution deaths, (powerlines) aswell as road kill
once got sent a tawny owl (though i dont do birds i could of easily sold it on for a lot more) bit it was riddled with shot so wouldnt touch it
all really depends on the the speceis wether they will check up on you for instance i woudnt touch kites or eagles unless i was entirely sure they met article 10 legislation
