THE LOCAL HUNT

now as some of you may have guessed ime not anti hunting, but for some reason the local foxhunt bdooly annoyes me,i have mixed  feelings about the hunt i love to see the redcoats on horseback and all the hounds, dont particularly care if theykill a fox.
but since the ban it riles me,they look down on mysort poaching a couple of birds to feed the kids but theyre poaching enmass for fun.you know a couple of days ago they met again, they have watchers with radio's and mobiles 4 miles around them on every bridalway road and lane, looking out for the police or any other 'problems',the horse boxes are guarded too.its like a real military opperation.
now if there were poachers in broad daylight with these numbers shooting deer on Exmoor thered be an outcry about it,imagine the headlines!civil disorder, wheres the law?
clearly its not a streight forward for or against topic anymore, whats your views
Tidal_wear

If you take a lurcher out, broad daylight, slip him on a fox and he grabs it your in big s**t  However,if you dress in red,are mounted on a valuable horse, and take the same fox with a pack of dogs blind eyes are turned  ;)
Its always the way mate, your hoi-polloi,not landed gentry, next time the pack passes you keep your eyes fixed to the ground and touch your forelock, know your place  [smilie=pdt_aliboronz_24.gif]

I agree with you in some aspects - my wife & I regularly visit the boxing day hunt up this way, not to ride out though, purely to see the hounds (personally I couldn't give a damn about someone on a horse, just doesn't interest me).

The hounds are amazing, if I can findi them I'll post some pics I took.

On the other side of the coin - I regulary carry out pest control on behalf of some farmers whose land is also on a large estate. Now the gamekeeper is fine, we've even been out shooting together but as for the hunts and the shooters - they are the most ignorant bunch I've ever seen.  Not even a word to the farmerwhose field they have just driven over in there nice shiny range rover(most haven't a clue about the ways of nature).
The keeper & I regulary come across poachers up this way, not one or two of them but van loads of dog men - allways armed & willing to lift everything not bolted down.

A few years ago the farmer confronted a bunch of them, next night there was a flaming bottle through his window!!!

Anyway, I'm going off subject here, since the ban there has been more & morfe foxes creating problems - for what they are (a bunch of bodies on horseback) it was a significant contribution to the pest control stakes.

Bit long winded but there you go [smilie=pdt_aliboronz_24.gif]

Theres been a swing away from the lone lamper out for a bunny or blacktip rabbit, bull crosses are now in Vogue, and what was once a solo game is now a spectator sport with four or five dogs in a subaru loosed at the same time on any fox or deer unlucky to cross their path
And these self-same guys wonder why lurcher afficianados get bad press.
As for the Mounted riders Oscar Wilde dubbed them "The unspeakable in pursuit of the uneatable" ;)
steve

yer right about bulls are now the dog to have its like a fashion i remember when it was dobermans then rottweilers ive all ways  had alsations labradors and jack russels my mate makes a fortune breeding bull mastiffs. going back to the hunts i do enjoy boxing day when the local hunt and hounds meet the antis are allways there but out numberd 50-1 like poacher says it worth going just to see the dogs.

great looking dogs,i agree totally i love the look of the hunt.all that BS about them having to put hundreds of dogs down ,havent heard of anything yet!
Tidal_wear

You could get the same amount of fox as the average hunt in a year with a decent terrier and a pair of lurchers, its not about pest control at all,its just pageantry and tradition  ;)
bobone

Whats new just fcuk  em and do what you like on or off permission.
fish

as long as you dont come on my 'no-permission'!!!!!
Yeeharr

To get nicked for killing a fox with a dog IME you have to be some sort of c@*#!! No-one wants to go to court over it. You do get a lot of idiots riding to hounds, but most of the people who work for the hunt are normal people. It's not about pest control, it is about tradition and I love tradition!

I've got no time for pricks whether they're hunting on £20k worth of horse or in an office, I don't care how important someone thinks they are, I'll always knock them down to my level!!!

I'm all for fox hunting!! Mind you I've ferreted and worked dogs on Wimbledon Common so I'm all for high profile poaching.
Tidal_wear

That was for wombles though

You know!!!! Orinoco hated it when I whacked him with the catty!

Hmmmm.  Here we go then!

I am ever so slightly biased about hunting, partly because I come from the biggest hunting area in the UK, and also because we keep a horse, and used to ride to hounds regularly.

I am a hound enthusiast, and love to see them work; it sends a shiver down my spine when I hear hounds in full cry.  I regularly dug out for two packs of foxhounds at home (farmer packs, not the up-market, fashionable ones).

Having said all that, I realise (and have been a victim of) some out and out bullshit from some of the hunting people.  Part of the problem is that when you're sat on a horse, you look down on everybody, and it sometimes comes accross as being rude, which isn't always the intention.

Part of the problem round here (the area where fish and I live) is that we have one of the most fashionable packs right here (The South & West Wilts).  I would love to subscribe, but cannot afford the £1000 each year to do so (compared to £100 for the Torrington Farmers).

I dont blame them for being cautious about what they are upto; I expect that Exmoor is virtually shut down while they're out.  It's a miricle that they have all kept going, and have actually recieved more support since the ban.

I dont bother post ban; mainly because I think all this 'trail' hunting is a load of bollocks!  One of our good friends round here is the KH for the local Beagles, and a nicer chap you are unlikely to meet.  I feel desperately sorry for him with all his 'children' (hounds) likely to be put down if they pack it in.

Hunting is like any other sport; you get a few tossers involved, and everyone gets labelled a 'toff' or described as being 'stuck up'.  Its like suggesting that all lurchermen are poachers.

The majority of people I used to hunt with were genuine lowly farmers or estate workers - the fact that they were mixed in with some toffs just added to the entertainment!

Sorry guys - rant over...........
fish

so post ban would they be fairly described as poachers?
bobone

How do the beagle packs hunt now with out the blacktip rabbit do they hunt a trail.
Yeeharr

The same way that fox hunts continue...................................................................................................................with a trail!!!!!!! Usually laid by a real animal!!!
