things from the woodhey guys,
here's a few things that i make from the wood that i gather from my area.
the knob stick is made from osage with pewter fill and snapping turtle tail for decoration.
the two catapults are the ones that i hunt with and they're of ash.
the burl noggins i hand carve from tree burls.
this one is silver maple
this one is red mulberry

you can seal the wood with butcher block oil or vegetable oil.

Fish,
Here's step #1 in making a noggin gotta find a proper sized burl. and get it cut. I like to cut mine in late winter and give them at least 6 months to dry in a cool dry place. It's best to seal the cut side once you've got it cut off the tree.

does it not harm the tree cutting the burl off ...mack

wabbiter,
no it doesn't harm the tree, it's no different than pruning a branch off and the tree will heal back over. i've been cutting them for years and haven't seen a tree die yet that i've cut a burl from. that's really all a burl is to begin with, is scar tissue from where the tree has been injured and healed itself.
