Trigger release rifle slingshot is it legal in U.K.?I am in the U.K and I'm building a slingshot rifle. Can anyone tell me whether or not it is legal in this country to use some kind of trigger mechanism release?

yep legal just usual stuff like not in a public place etc. cant wait to see some pics.

Thanks Fish, I got hold of a cheap walnut rifle stock, and I'm just playing with ideas!!!

Just keep in mind how quickly rubber looses power when you keep it extended.
I tested this in my test setup.
20 cm Thera Tube green, double (chinese method), extended to 110 cm.
Does 50 m/s with 15 mm steel balls.
Then I kept it cocked for 10 minutes.
Result: 30 m/s! Very slow.
The band does recover after a while, though.
I question the efficiency of a slingshot rifle. You have to draw and shoot as fast as at all possible. The shorter the bands are in extended condition, the more power do you have.

Hi Jörg, I can usually get a shot off in less than 15 sec but I will keep an eye on the power level!!! I have been keeping up with your thread on draw lengthes and rubber types. I don't suppose you could make me one of your sling releases? with some kind of remote camera shutter release that would be some piece of kit and save me allot of design work!!! of all your designs that is what I covet most

How do you build one?

Hi Fish, would it be ok to pm you for some advice on my sling rifle?
|
fish

of course i have made one last winter.

Thanks for the PM. Fish, very interesting and superbly simple Idea!!!

I thought I would give this a try, it works so far in my tests!!!

A better picture of what I am trying to achieve; we'll see what it looks like when i've tidied it up and mounted it to the rifle stock!!!

I want to see the results !!!! Good luck !!!

Jesus !!! This gonna be amazing !!!!

Yes it is Punch Seems like its going to work though and I am the biggest kid around here I like to play with my own toys to much!!!
Thanks gtavares I really hope so!

Looks like those bands aren't going to be stretched enough for full power :(

Hi Adam, this is just a test set-up!!! I am working on an extendible version to enable variable length of pull.

fcuking Jesus !!!!!!!!! I love this slingshot rifle !!!!!!!
Congratulations bud !!!! I really enjoy it !!!Congratulations !!!!!

Thanks Gtavares, I really appreciate your enthusiastic comments!!! I test fired it yesterday, and it proved to be quite accurate at short range, but I need to tweak the firing mechanism a little for a crisp let-off. It's still a work in progress; I intend to change the broom handle 'barrel' for some kind of extendible version, when I can stop shooting this beauty long enough to design one!!!

Leave it a little longer, have more power...like this one: http://www.slingshotrifle.com/ *Video( http://www.cmt.com/videos/misc/27...xtra-clinging-to-my-toy-gun.jhtml)

Hmm... instead of extending the 'barrel' why not move the anchor point of the elastic closer to the trigger and run it forwards to a pulley before coming back to the trigger again?
That way you increase your draw length but without having to make the rifle too long?
|
julesj
|
Adam, I like your idea of a pulley system. I have never used this on any of my designs; how effective is a pulley in increasing power output, and where and how would you mount it, if you were me, so as not to spoil the lines and make it look 'clunky'? I have limited engineering knowledge, and I only use off-the-shelf components!
|
julesj
|
Could the fixing points be on a sliding rail that locks in to position to enable cocking/ tensioning of the bands maybe?
|
Adam

Joerg has some pulley designs in his latest video if I remember correctly.
You want the pulleys at the 'muzzle' end of the rifle so the band starts at the trigger, goes forward to and around the pulley and is just slack enough so you can load the pouch and pull the bands back to the trigger.
I'll draw something, photograph it and send it you. Might take me a while as I have a physio appointment in an hour.
Cheers,

What you could use is not a pulley, but a simple set of rollers. You could keep the "barrel" a bit shorter, but the limit is about 1/5th of the total draw length.
Let's not forget that you need to draw the rubber out to about 500% of the original (relaxed) length. So if you would attach the rubber at the trigger you would only get 200%.
Rollers work, but the mechanical stress will shorten band life, though. Maybe it is best to just go ahead and use a little longer "barrel".

Thanks bud !! Make some video !!!!

Thanks for the heads-up on the rollers and pully idea, Jörg. I have gone for the longer 'barrel', just for now, and I will make a test rig for the pulley/roller idea, soon. I am still going to look in to a way of adjusting the pull length, as I often shoot indoors and it can get a little hairy shooting anything at anywhere near full pull!!! I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for the inspiration you gave me on the pouch release; other ideas are most welcome!!!

Jörg is right that mechanical stress will shorten band life - using larger wheels and not compounding angles too much would ease that somewhat.
Jörg, rollers is exactly what I meant by pulleys - we might have a translation issue there ;)
|
JoergS
|
Ok, for me a pulley is a setup that uses rollers to make it easier to lift heavy objects, for the price of a longer pull.
I realizenow that you can also use that term for a single roller.
My fault!

Your English is so good it's hard sometimes to remember it's not your first language!
Nobody's fault Jörg - just another of those linguistic differences that keep us all interesting ;)

Anybody Know a cheap pulley up to the job?

I am thinking of mounting the pulleys horizontally, as in this example!
Anybody got any thoughts on this arrangement?
