Weekend Projects

After we got the "Honey Do List" done for the old war horse (Jeez don't let her hear that!),we had some time for some carving-YEAH!. We finished these two frames up. The first one is a Spalted Sweet Gum Universal Ergo. . The second one is a pattern I haven't played with in awhile called a "Full Blown Ergo". Along with the canted handle and index finger brace, this one calls for a thumb rest-grip. It's like a combo pistol grip and finger brace grip. It's carved from a nice thick chunk of Mulberry. Hey,I forgot these two: First one is Osage Orange, the second is Curly Maple. Both Universal Ergo frames. God ,I love wood!!! Is it normal to want to live in your shed? Flatband

very nice cattys, what finish is that on them? wood is a wonderful thing to work with, ime lucky here as theres a wood seller not far from here that stocks every concievable hardwood ,spalt and burl, over 100 different woods from bubinga to ebony to holm oak.

as for the shed thing, yep its normal for us chaps!

Great job, Flatband. But can you post a picture of your hand holding them? I lack the feeling about the size.

Same thing happened to me with the Fish Hunter. I expected a large frame, and was pleasantly surprised to see that the slingshot is much smaller than I thought.

The first one looks amazing.

Yeah, they look very neat. I'm currently having a go at making a few custom catapults.

I'm using my friends CNC machine, so I'm hoping to create something interesting.

Anyway, love the caties; great job!

Thanks guys
Fish I use a Spar Gloss Urethane. Being a New Yorker,we love all that gloss!  I tried all the oils but I don't like that dull finish. If I hunted I would want to dull it down though. I have to take a photo of me holding one. I have a big hand but have reduced the size of my frames a lot and actually have gotten used to them slightly smaller. These are 3 3/4" wide x 5 3/4"s high x 3/4"s thick. It is great that you have a good wood source near you. Burl is something special but very difficult because of the voids and wild grain patterns. Here's a picture of a Maple Burl Ergo that we got lucky with! Shed living? YES!!!!   Flatband

u are so lucky getting good wood!
i would love to get a peace of this wood, but here it is absolutly impossible!
no way getting burls!
Flatband

Yeah Baumstamm, that Osage is a great Slingshot(Catty) wood. Give me a ring at my e-mail address ( Bassrule@optonline.net). I'll get your address and send you a piece. I think I have a piece that isn't roughed out yet. Flatband

Amazing work flatband, the first one looks good enough to eat its like toffee

I had a go at my first two catties yesterday, a normal and an ergo, will post on them once I finish them. No fancy woods like yours just a piece of oak

after oiling you have to polish them than you have also a glossy finish ;)
Flatband

Yeah, I know King but the Gloss from the Poly is really nice-and durable too! I have a few pictures of how I hold my Ergo styles. A few people were asking and also my hand size so they can get an idea of the size of the frames. Most are no taller then 6 inches and around 4 inches wide at the most. Here's a couple pictures:
