Went out duck flighting last Saturday evening, when we arrived we could see out in the distance about 150 geese feeding in a paddock, we thought we were in for a good night, until the farmer drove his tractor over the field next to the paddock and they all got up and flew off in the other direction.
Anyway I got myself in a field of stubble and waited.............and waited .....................................and waited, then I heard a honk, honk, honk call coming from behind the wood, here we go I thought, 1st one of the season, then it appeared, a single goose, probably about 50 feet away to my left, and maybe 40ft up, using No3 shot I would have to hit it in the head to bring it down, so I let both barrells go just in front of him, the honking seemed to switch to laughter as he carried on over the fields.
I stayed there for a good while longer with neither sight nor sound of a duck or goose, then went home, empty handed but happy

It's always good to be out no matter what, not been to the ducks yet, I generally give them until well into October, great sport, especially as duck is so good to eat.

Still loads of small young Duck around at the moment, Noticed while on the river yesterday two lots only half grown, I also give it till about Mid to late October unless whilst out I see an adult Drake
